Hi,

The first is a Gin-Matsuba as it is silver as opposed to white(shiro)

The 2nd is not so easy to see with the photo. I cannot detect any matsuba type scales which would leave it a yamabuki. But if there is matsuba scales present then it would be a Kin-matsuba.

Greg yours looks like kinbo or kin kabuto. it's basically a yellowish version of the Gin kabuto. on the progression chart your koi is not to far evolved from magoi.

Yamabuki Ogon .... with the pectorals caught in reverse movement, it looks like koi is bowing. A very polite koi.

I have the japanese plant called yamabuki in my japanese garden. The bloom color matches pretty well with the koi and that's why they named the koi that from the flower. I'm trying to remember it's scientific name, kerria something.

I used to have a big yamabuki and the flower reminds me of her in the spring.
She was very friendly and would come when I splashed the water next to the pond edge and beg food.

Story, if i may

one day I slipped out to the pond and stood watching a group of sparrows taking turns bathing on the edge. Well my yamabuki thought it was me and was edging up closer and closer looking for food. When she got within inches of the birds she was finally spotted and I thought they were gonna have a heart attack to see who could throw themselves into the air to escape from being eaten!

Everytime I see a bunch of sparrows bathing I think of her. She eventually was caught and eaten by a raccoon because of her friendliness. I think that was something like 15-18 years ago. Ever since then I have refused to make friends with the koi and encouraged them not to come to the edge for food.I throw the food in the center so when I approach they all head for the middle.

I lost a little black bonsai koi last year to a herron. She would come running to me with her mouth going for food, I always fed her in the middle but she would still come. Went out there one morning and she was not there.

I netted the pond ( closed the barn after the horse was gone ) but it looked so ugly I couldn't stand it.

Don't know how Kimiko ( my favorite Asagi ) will react outside. She's only been with me since last fall. She's starting to get alot friendlier much to my chagrin.....
