The buggers were, well... buggering... last night. I suspect that's why the 'DOCs' were much higher yesterday because this morning was a repeat and they were splashing quite a bit last night.
Thanks to everyone who replied to my questions. A week or so has gone by and here are my experiences to date:
I keep the feeder over the pond 24/7. Initially I only placed a cup of feed in the hopper at a time. Then after reading what others are doing and agreeing with their reasoning I added more to try and keep the hopper full. It worked out to about 2 cups during the day and 3 cups at night. They seem to be eating a little more than a kilo of feed per day. Based on a per cup weight of approximately 230 gms.
I have 23 fish in the temporary pond. They range from 12 inches to 28 inches in length. Based on length to weight estimation, there is 67 lbs of fish. 3% of body weight would equal approximately 2.01 lbs.
Yesterday I bought some Sweetpotato pellets to feed in place of the Hikari Wheatgerm (ran out of the wheatgerm). The large pellets were cheaper than the medium because the medium were packaged in 2.5 kg bags instead of 5 kg bags. (like about $10 cheaper for the same amount). Mixed the large pellets 50/50 by volume with some higher protein feed and placed in feeder. Thought I had adjusted the 'clacker' to account for the larger pellet. The large pellets are 10 mm vs 8 mm for the medium. This morning found the 'clacker' jammed. No amount of tugging would release more pellets. Re-adjusted the 'clacker' to open wider hoping it would return to close position with greater force and stop the jamming. That was about an hour ago. The feed level has dropped some and has not jammed. Here's hoping it will stay free.
More questions:
1) Has anyone else besides delaney had the feeder jam on them?
2) Should I be concerned about the amount of feed they are getting?
3) Or will they slow down their intake after another bit or so?
No apologies for bringing this thread back,Mark Gardner has made this great WMV of his koi using the kichi koi feeder and I think every koi keeper will enjoy it,hope the link works! Doris
just curious if any one has considered using an automatic dog feeder as a koi feeder ? There is one in the market with removable bowl, costs around $80 over the internet. I have been told by a few folks that it works, although it is not as good looking as 'koi' specific feeders. It comes with an electronic timer, so it is quite programmable.
