200 pieces means 200 koi. Japanese currency is in yen.

And I have to say that I think some of the koi are really nice koi and I dont think I will be able to afford these koi. I think most will be mega bucks.
It's 105 Yen to 1 US Dollar first of. Anyways, if your looking to buy high quality as in high quality, you have to go to this auction!!! I am letting you know that you dont have to spend mega bucks at this auction...

The more I learn about purchasing koi, the more I lean towards purchasing Nisai koi at a minimum. When I look at tosai (mostly online), I can't seem to find anything I would like to have in my pond. Of course I would never purchase koi online without going to look at it or recommended by respected professional. But I figure, if the breeders released these tosai for sale...they didn't make the cut to move on. So as a tosai, will these koi have a 50/50 chance to be mediocre at best? I can't see Japanese breeders making any mistakes in thier cull programs. Are the breeders releasing these tosai for sale, before they turn "unsellable" to discerning hobbiest. Actually thinking outloud, there are hobbiest out-there buying these tosai so that they can run thier tests for koi development as it relates to water quality and make-up. I guess, to each his own.

I'm sure when I finally get my pond in, I'll start off with some local $100 fish to get me acclimated to keeping koi without killing any. Once I feel my filtration system is performing consistently over a few seasons, I'll probably chuck those cheap fish in the river and go get some real fish. HOPEFULLY I will be confident in taking the big step into Nishikigoi and not just koi. I just think better to buy one $2000-3000 fish as opposed to four $500-$700 fish.

Eagle was 98cms when photographed for this years calendar.

'Pieces' is the number of koi, the unit if you like. They are selling 200 pieces, that's 200 koi.

If it was goldfish I believe the unit is 'tails', so they'd be selling 200 'tails'...

You should ask Brian about the auction, he's been there and he has some nice fish being held at the farm that he bought at the auction...Trust me Momotaro really pushes the highest quality fish for the auction so these fish are by no means second rate...

I know most of the Brit dealers who will be on hand for the auction. The only american I know will be Keirin out of PA.

I always enjoy reading these kinds of threads. We have a pretty knowledgeable crew here on the KB board and it's been fun over the last year or so to watch
the learning curve rise!

Question

Hi just going to the auction would be mega bucks not counting the koi that I would want to purchase. A trip to Japan would run around 3 grand right?

KFG: If you were interested, im sure you could get a broker in Japan to bid on a koi for you and then pay that person a percentage.
