Origin of kikokuryu

I just bought this 12.5 inch male beni kikokuryu and I would like to know if somebody know what kind of breeding he is coming from.
Is the kikokuryu a well apprecied kind of koļ or is he only a curiosity ?
What are the differents standarts and quality ?
Anyway I find him lovely and I join a picture because I always like to see them when I am surfing on this nice forum.

Aoki - used Kin Showa and Kikusui to develop his line of Beni Kikokuryu....
Kase - same idea as Aoki...
Igarashi - used Kumonryu and Kikusui....

These are the main three guys who produce this type of koi...Since this koi is becoming more popular alot more breeders are breeding too....

Here's a pic of a Beni Kikokuryu I bought in Feb...Yes Dick, that is an Asagi in the bowl too....too clean to pass on.....Happy Easter to all...

Yeah it is, kinda hard to know the difference still because you have Doitsu Kujaku now and it is even harder to tell the difference...

When the breed was established originally it could best be discribed as a metallic
kumonryu. Then the beni was added as already explained. My koi-kichi had one of the first beni's to leave japan. Sure wish i could tell the story as it happened
but it would only get some people in trouble. Anyway, it was the nicest one
color wise i have ever seen. came into the state as a 6 inch fish and grew long and skinny. Owner called it Bullet. Looked like it was shot from a gun when ever a net came anywhere near it! I wish i could remember the name of the original breeder. His koi were so very expensive. If you could afford a female you'd see them occassionally at shows in japan. the red was scarlet and the black was truely black. At different times of the year the black would roll off to reveal the nicest red. Part of the story I can't tell is how a male got away from this guy after many years and was used to begin making tosai available to the public. It's a neat koi!

oh and before I forgot, Hey! nice asagi-thanks!

thanx aquitori,
bought it as a 4" fish and it"s 12"now.
the dealer who sold it to me told me that it was a yamato nishiki but i disagreed with him,but since he has a lot more experience......
nice to know i was right back then(it was my first "koi year")

Question

What is this fish? When I got him he said he was a beni something or another. This koi has no scales at all and is smooth as a catfish. He is also ugly.

First let me say that your pond is very natural looking and attractive.

my best quess on the breeding of your koi in question is beni kumonryu. My opinion only is that the best breeder of this variety is Seijuro san from Niigata.
I had not heard if he was adversely affected by the earthquake.

Now I am really stumped as all the koi that I have ever looked at are black and white. Where does the orange come in and what in the heck and I going to spawn this guy with? I though about pairing it up with mY Gin Matsuba but I dont know if I would come up with anything. The only reason I purchased this boy was because I have never saw on like it. Is it not truely ugly? They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder , but I only see ug when I look at him.
