Part II: The wheeling and dealing....

Who likes to wheel and deal with their dealer? I do sometimes if the price doesn't match the quality of the koi, am not goin to deal it down but have the dealer explain to me why it is the price...This is where your level of knowledge comes in...either the dealer can BS you into buying it or you can simple just say pass....
But in some cases you don't need to wheel in deal, if you have a very good relationship with your dealer he can give you a price on the fish way lower than what you expected....

Aquitori:
Mr. dealer why is this fish prised so high?"

Dealer:
"Because I hung the sign tatagoi above the tank!"

HAHAHA...hella funny!!! or this phrase:

"Famous breeder, that's why it's very expensive..."

Get point with the tategoi word...How often do you see dealers using this word for kois that they can't sell. I think the general public has to be reminded of that word..

B.Scott, Dick or MikeM can you explain the word tategoi a bit more.

Like most things wheather associating with a dealer is a good thing - depends on the dealer. If the dealer is way more experienced, trustworthy, and willing to teach it is a great way to go. You can learn a lot from the right dealers.

It is interesting to see at koi shows in the U.S. which dealers hang out together and which keep mostly to themselves with just a few special customers around. Beware of dealers that seem to do most of their business with customers via long distance. I guess the flipside is why don't local koi keepers support this dealer. Also think twice when a dealer bashes all other dealers.

Buying and supporting a few well selected dealers is a good thing if you choose your dealers and breeders wisely.

Great words of wisdom Ray. I live here in the Silicon Valley where I have Champion Nishikigoi, Genkikoi and Tse Koi all with in a mile radius of each other. I think I have a good relationship with all my dealers and trust them to the fullest...If on dealer doesn't have what I am looking for I can go down the street and search another dealer...I think we in the Silicon Valley don't realize how lucky as hobbyist to have these dealers setup so close to each other. I find myself lucky that each one of these dealers are open to share knowledge on the business and koi-keepers side...

Strange difference Aquitori. Of the 25 or so dealers within an hours drive, I don't trust a single one competely. No enough to buy fish from them at least. I listen and ask a few questions and always get the feeling they are BS-ing me to some extent. Sure nobody is perfect and every dealer needs a spiel to run by the customers. But somehow they all are fairly new in the game and I can't find the one who has the understanding to make things click.
That means it's off to the UK when I'm in the market for koi.

Tatagoi... In a nutshell a fish that the breeder feels has potential to develop into an outstanding fish. When the dealer decides it must make room for a fish with more potential it becomes tatashita... a cast-off. All too often tatagoi means the better looking fish of a shipment of the tatashita a dealer has bought. In general a tatagoi is a VERY special fish and you will never find them in the average dealer's pond. Even in Japan you can count yourself fortunate if a breeder honors you by allowing you to view his holy grail... his tatagoi. The older the age group of fish you look at, the fewer tatagoi you will find. It's a very sharp pinnicle and the better large fish are indeed very rare.

Buying Koi from the UK

B. Scott

Unless the koi are coming in under the radar, do EU regulations permit koi to be exported from the UK because of its SVC status?

I live in N.Ireland and because of regulations introduced last year we are no longer able to bring in Koi from the UK. They have to come in straight from Japan. Not easy.

Well the dealers I deal with have atleast 10 or more years of dealing...They are pretty fair they know my price range as far as what to show me...I know now what ceratin things should cost based on my price range. Pretty sad you feel that way there about your dealers...Most dealers think they can fool most seasoned hobbyist by throwing big terms around, but in the end hobbyist have to educate themselves somehow. Books, videos and magazines aren't enough...Hobbyist still need hands on experience to put two and two together. Well, like they say in the begin "Find a Dealer you can Trust and start a good relationship with." In your case maybe someday...
