That is sad state of affairs B.Scott. But understandable. Here in Colorado, we do not have as many dealers as you, but there are maybe 5 or so within 2 hours. Not a one have I bought koi from, for the same reasons as you. Their "level" just isn't there, nor is their motivation. They are catering to a different "crowd". So I have to go to California, or England, to get the level of help I need. But with the internet, so many things are possible. And there is always Japan to buy koi from

Unless the koi are coming in under the radar, do EU regulations permit koi to be exported from the UK because of its SVC status?
I live in N.Ireland and because of regulations introduced last year we are no longer able to bring in Koi from the UK. They have to come in straight from Japan. Not easy.
Trevor
That's news to me.!

I brought some in last year and as far as I know, once they have been imported into the EU they are allowed to be transfered between all (most?) EU member states. I even took three boxes of Tosai across at the height of the foot and mouth crisis (They were confiscating cheese sandwiches)

I know some fish are brought over from the UK to the show in Arcen (Netherlands) each summer.
I transport my fish on a dolly with LIVE FISH stamped in big letters on the sides. Kinda hard to hide a couple of three foot long boxes plus luggage. I take them in on the HSS ferry from Harwich to Hook of Holland.
The only thing I can think of is that living on an island you my as yet be free of any infection with SVC and the gooberment plans to keep it that way. If the rest the EU has been exposed anyway there might be no need to quarintine.
This reminds me of the UK and the Rabies thing. I grew up in Southern Calif where rabies is endemic and we never saw the slavering hourdes of rabid animals looking for victims. Once every five or six years you would hear of someone dying of rabies. Not the message the government in the UK would have you believe.

Welcome back to insanity BBS Scott

Can without a doubt agree with you on most off your feelings about outlets. We spent eight years travelling and checking out dealer around before we where came to a rest in Germany. You literary can say we worked our way down. Most we did not trust some we just didn’t feel knew or cared enough.

A little number where nice and honest but they couldn’t offer us anything to reach for or learn. Of these some are no friends and seekers with us, places where we sit down and disuse all the thing we don’t understand or know.

By accident (the last stop after five week roaming in Europe, had to double back 4.5 hours) we found our light in and free for a visit. According to map24 its just 1260 km (783 ml). This is still after four years the dealer of our choice and we have not been disappointed (still lots to see and learn). Please do send our best wishes if you see him from his Norwegian friends!

Sometimes its not. Some people mistake you for an employee rather than a hobbyist who supports a dealer.. So this in return can work against you..

The ultimate--

open the fish bag and check pH. In a fish bowl full of pond water, lower the pH ( with 'ph down' ) to the same reading as the bag. Then immediately transfer the fish to the bowl. Your fish is now in acidic water but with no ammonia. Now, on a drip system, add more Qtank water (of a normal pH) until the PH rises in the bowl, over the next 1/2 hour. In truth, this is overkill but in Marine fish, losses were reduced to near zero by using this method. Koi may not appreciate the effort?!

JR, a question for you.

When you add pond water (with higher pH) slowly (on the drip system) to the koi tub, your intention is to acclimate the fish to the new and higher pH slowly. That is good and understandable. But doing so you convert amonium back to amonia again and make the fish suffer a half hour in that bowl? I would only do it your way with Amquel +air stone and a bowl cover.

Or I would adjust the Qtank's pH down a tad and allow pH to crop up as water change the next few days. MA Le

Jim, I dabbled in the Saltwater industry for a bit with a friedn who was bringing on Net caught saltwater fish from around the world. This drip system is what we used when they came in. I also remember using this system on my home qt for saltwater witj Blue and Purple Linkia starfish...

Dad.
Not only marine fish but little gourami, tatras, angels, barbz, and the like.

It will GREATLY reduce mortalities, or " stress"... ahem...

Koi would certainly appreciate the effort but most folks dont have the means to alter PH (or the time or the chems or the money or the knowledge)

I can tell you the PH of a koi bag that travelled 12-20 hors or more.
It's in the sixes.

Ya got a PH 7.5- 8.5 ?
Toss them in..
Make sure and cover the tank
They'll be fine. Never lost a one like that !

Nor from going cold to hot.. 20 degrees/ in only minutes. No Problem
I did that yesterday with 200 fish.

Hot to 20 degrees cooler , that fast ?
The rose bushes will love you.

Correctamundo El Jimbo... It would indeed be " Thee Ultimate" but not necessary... with Koi.
