trip to the mud pond

Though I should take a drive to the farm to see if any koi were actually groowing in the pond.

Hello Bob

This pond is primarily a kohaku to kohaku spawning. However. there are a few rope full of fry from a flockspawning that occured with my big female golden yellow ogon. I donot normally cultivate flock spawnings but she has managed to slip under the spawning radar every year including this one. I had her paired up for three weeks with no luck and the minute she hit the main pond all hell broke loose. I threw in a few ropes and hatched them out. 90 percent of them were culled the third week and the rest went to the mud pond with the rest of the kohaku spawn. I have never spawned ogons but I swear that I am seeing what appears to be some lemon hariwake mixed in with the crowd. Dont know if that is even possible but they sure look to be from a distance. Cannot wait to run the seine net through this mud hole. Couple more months me thinks.

Kiefer,

Interesting with the Ogon, what it got mixed with in the flock spawning could produce some surprising results.

I gather that you dont visit the fry pond very often, so are the actually fed perhaps by others, or are they left to their own devices in the green water?

Are their predators in the area? I think you may have mentioned previously that the pond was on a farm, so presume it is well looked after.

Yes, they are fed by others but I manage to sneak by periodically to monitor their progress. Remember the saying: a watched pot never boils?.....

There are no prdetors to speak off. The pond is fully netted.
