Akinosan,
many shows have a novice category And i believe it is determined in a way that would encourage even more participation...usually it is in relation to if the hobbyist has shown koi, or for how long.

And while honoring the longtime member is worthwhile a "named award" means little without a universal understanding....and the Aawrd title gets excessively long when it is "The Julia and Andrew Sutherland Award for recognition of the best purchase while at the show".
And friendship awards are kinda neat, but then some friendship awards accomplish something other than getting the name of another koi club mentioned, and others don't....
What would be cool is if the club that is active in giving awards would adopt a trophy category that is not established and the club presenter(s) becomes learned and earnest in their task of deciding/determinating the recipient....here's one that would be cool..."Best Dark koi"

Novice would be cool, but I have seen so-called novice with better fish than me!!! One of those so-called novice being you Akinosan..

If the hype isn't there for the show then the trophies dont really matter, because do people think there fish is better that day knowing damn well that hobbyist with better fish didn't want to come out...I think the mentality should be you beat the best of the best, you beat the top name hobbyist in your area and hands down the trophies don't matter. At some shows it's about smashing egos more than collecting the trophy. Knowing my 3 figure fish beat out a 4 figure fish is better than any trophies...

ANOTHER WAY to make shows more fun is for the indidvidual clubs make a game of it. "It" being judging.
Set up a ballot for some of the varieties and have a go at "matching the Judges", with the grading being held immediately after posting of the judges' opinions By all those in the club that have a ballot.....and do it just like when you had a lazy teacher...everyone grades someone else's test.
And the winner gets something fun..not a trophy or plaque. Like a bag of Prawns.

I would like to see dealers compete in a show. I know everyone thinks its unfair but It would be nice to challenge the dealer as well. I know not everyone wants to go against the dealer but you can make it an option to compete in the open category or the dealer/hobbyist category.

Just some thoughts.

One Award over all others

Twenty years ago, I started keeping and at that time I had serveral small koi (less than 20cm) that I entered each month at a club table show. At these table shows, points were awarded to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, GC, Runner Up and peoples Choice. A single point was also added for each koi entered. At the end of the season, awards were presented to members based on these points.

At the time I was only 14 and the fish I had were not variety impressive. But each month, proudly I exhibited.

At the end of the show season I was given one trophy. An encouragement award. The award recognised my enthusiasm. I was very excited to get the trophy. If I win a trophy or other prize in the future, it will be treasured.

But this one encouragement award will be my most treasured.

You might be crazy but dealers aren't. When dealers compete against each other one dealer wins and the rest are losers. That is part of the reason dealers turned koi shows over to hobbyisits. Dealers saw how bad it made most of them look. yes hobbyists show dealer's koi, but after they have had a hand in making of the fish (or when the hobbyist plays dirtbag and enters a fish they have bought at the show; it still doesn't reflect that poorly on the dealer because the hobbyist chose which fish, and it wasn't the dealers' prides and joys.) So if the fish doesn't win the dealer isn't tarnished....the hobbyist's skills are suspect...or the genes of the fish...or just unlucky.
Any way, dealers loose when they show fish...except the one that wins...Which dealer would you buy from at a show where the dealers competed...the GC Dealer..and god forbid he get GC and mature Champion.
Plus dealers lug koi around to sell tehm. they know it is WORK. They want to get paid for it. Their trophies are Pounds, Euros, yen, and dollars.
BUT I'll be damned if I know why they won't let people that love koi so much that they go and pull nets when given a chance and get fish for their work.
I went to Joe's the other day and they were culling. i looked on and walked around throwing food in the ponds to see what was doing what...OMG I hope "feeding the koi" won't get me barred from Koi Shows Now..... honest, it was less than a kilo and I didn't put any in the feeders.

Luke, I am a Crazy.... But truthfully all or most dealers who are true would love to compete after all they are hobbyists or have started out as hobbyists.

With that said Breeders in Japan are happy for the guy who wins GC, Kokugyo etc. They don't take it as a loss of business because they are true to themselves and the hobby. I suppose many hobbyists would look down upon on a dealer who didnt win the GC but it also is a way for them to sharpen skills and show what they got.

Another way to look at in a positive way is we don't knock the guy who took reserve GC or look down upon them. Most of us still would love to be in that position.

Yet again this is still about the best fish of the day. I would love to see dealers bring out what they got and show.

"They used to call me crazy Joe now they call me batman" Quote from lean on me the movie... LOL
