My biggest koi is a special female sanke from Momotaro, I was very fortunate to be allowed to purchase her.
They expected her to reach 1 metre, but sadly she broke her back in 2 places while spawning 2 years ago. She was then placed into a 500 ton pond for retirement, which is where they had planned her to spend the rest of her life.
In March 2003, while visiting Momotaro they gave me the chance and gamble to buy this koi. They stated it was and would still be their number one sanke parent, but for the damage. There was no guarantee it would travel to the UK, let alone every breed again.
She measures right now 84cm, not counting the bend, she is really 86cm or over, if only she could be straightened out!!
Two photos posted below, the first at Momotaro, just prior to spawning at that crucial time and one taken by me a year later at my home. I waited forever for this shot, as this is the straightest she ever gets. Most of the time she looks quite sad with her bends. she is very slow at feeding and difficult to get any weight on, but her life is happy, living with 6 other big koi.
I bred from her last year and one of her babies will be the BKKS National show next weekend, a tosai of 37cm.
She will be spawned again over the next 2 weeks
