Female vs male

Hi everyone,

How much more would a female cost than a male assuming same breeder, same size(2 year old about 20 inches), and same quality?

Anyone wants to take a shot at it. Thanks

John,
If it is the same size, same age, same breader and same quality, then why
we have to pay more ??? we need a good lawyer here to answer your Q;-))

Anyway, I think it is dependeing on the dealer - sometime they charge more
than 30% ;-(

If both fish are the same in every aspect except for sex, then your paying more for the potential in the female. Females get bigger and thats what your usually paying for. But you usually she more the price of a female double the price of male.

Dinh and Aquitori,

Thanks for the answer. Of course in reality. You can't have the same size and same quality. My purpose was to get a ball park price difference that a breeder/dealer would charge for different sex.

I think what comes into play is preceived value and anticipated demand.

for example.
you want to breed koi. you have a beautiful example of a female. you want a male. the seller knows this. The price of the male just went up. I think the correct way to approach something is to ask for a quote on both sexes, that way you haven't tipped your hat as to which way you are leaning. yes the female is worth more than the male.

that's why I always liked a dealer, that had bins with prices posted. If I have to ask, and he knows I'm used to paying say $750. for a fish then the price is established. if i refuse it and the next person comes in with no history......well then they may get a break for a sale or two. This is not a slam on any one dealer.

Long way to answer your question I know you wanted an easy 62% the cost of the female answer but reality is, well what it is. Supply and demand! Most people in the koi business who are sucessful don't give them away.....

30% That is a good deal.. Considering that most people who go with a reputible dealer get charged 20% on top of fee that Breeder gives you plus you gotta pay shipping. Considering that they pick it up and QT it for you and deal with all that small stuff that goes on behind the scenes 30% is a good deal and much cheaper than if you were to go to Japan. Add up the plane ticket, train ride, hotel and food.... I am liking that 30% mark up....
