did i see that right ? submerged BHM , is that as effective as when showered . how will it compare to matting or K1.

Steve I do not feel it can be comapred to the showers as it is a different method of filtration all together. The reason the Matting was changed was it colledted too much muck and was hard if not impossible to clean. Also Daisuke found that some of the koi were getting Hikui. This has stopped now the matting has gone and BHM used, words from Daisuke not mine.

The one advantage of the submerged is with the air line diffusers 12-18 inches below the trays of media it has time disperse and not erode the media and it is easy to clean by throwing in a submerged pump to the next chamber and hosing it down in a slow othadox manner. When I cleaned the systems over there Daisuke made me go back over the medai at a slightly quicker pace to check if all the media was clean.

The submerged media is used on the 500 ton and 1500 ton ponds as these all had Japanese Matting before as a submerged media. None of the other new sytems is any where near this gallonage so no need for submerged media.

Interesting. Maeda's approach is so different than my "conventional" thinking. With the mats getting loaded with muck, my thought would be to find a way to remove the muck from the system more quickly through settlement baffles "or something" at the beginning of the watercourse, rather than look for ways to minimize settlement. .........Jules, you have to tell more when you can.

The chambers at the start of the system are fed by a massive vortex with pipes on the edge that have a t-piece about 1 ft from the bottom all these t's point in an anti clockways direction to give a vortex effect with 8 pipes feeding the system from 8 "bottom drains" there is an air ring abouve the 150mm waste pipe and this lifts the centre column of water and acts as a settlement. The water is then passed into 2 individual chambers via 2 150mm transfer ports. This goes into another submerged chamber before going to the pumped bay and up and over the showers. On all the other chambers there are 150mm midwater feeds that feed directly from the pool. This is because the pumps pull so much water over the showers if it was done convensionaly it would soon empty the system and starve the pumps of water for the showers. See attached pictures.
