Got myself a new Tetra pH and Sera GH test kit.

Source water = 3 drops (=3dGH), pH 7

Pond water = 4 drops (=4dGH), pH between 7 to 7.5

Combo Hanna meter still register pH of 6.7....obviously require calibration.

**If I remember correctly to convert dGH to the more conventional unit (?) we multiply by 17 or 18. That will mean my source water as well as pond water's GH has increased.

me again here too, can someone tell me how to post a new post so i dont have to hijack someone elses thread just cause it has a kohaku!!

please forgive me but i want to know some opinions on these fish.
these are the ones ive just spawned from.. the bigger two or three are the females and the small ones are all boys.

seems the red on the females is more like an orange yet there are some boys that have a good strong red, dont know what youd call it and dont know if it matches any of the better fish around at all but the best red fish we had got eaten by our dog when soemone had their back turned.
hopefully i can find another bigger female kohaku that has a s decent red and not orange/red to her. i havent gone through all cages yet, can someone say which males to use next time.

if they are crap dont hold back, but thats all ive got access to here at the moment in australia. maybe i can outsource a better stock later at a koi auction..anyone got some input???

thanks, much appreciated.

Wink Latest development

Have not been active on koi forum for a while.

Got myself to take some photos of my kois yesterday. Here are the latest on these 2 kois.

Benihanako offspring, female now measuring 65cm. Shiroji is still good and hi has also improved.

Dainichi showa now measuring 58cm. Turned out to be (to me) of indeterminate sex...more a her than a him. Note the sumi on the head has tightened a bit.

Hope you guys like them.

I guess you now know what Dainichi showas are all about - wait for it (sumi), wait for it. It is definitely worth waiting for isn't it?!

On another note, concerning your kohaku. There's somewhat of a falicy that has been going around the hobby for over 25 years. I still hear it today on occasion. That is, in regards to the pattern. I've always said that patterns don't change much from head to tail, as far a the spacing between steps opening up, but what the eye is really seeing is the growth in the fish and the changes in patterns with regards to the girth, especially at the shoulders. The only attributable factor I have seen is that the sashi cleans up and can make it seem like there's more space between steps. Have you noticed this trait as well?? By the way, both fish are really coming along nicely. Thanks for the updates!

Both are progressing so well! The beni on the Kohaku's face has consolidated nicely. The pattern is more interesting now than before, and the depth of the beni is awesome. The Showa is classic.

Wow, both fish look like they've improved considerably. The showa is outstanding.

I agree with you on both fronts.

I have seen many times how a kohaku's pattern "changes" as it puts on volume/girth esp on the shoulder region. When I select kohaku I always keep this in mind esp with hi patches that extend down to the lateral line.

Thanks for viewing and your positive comments.

Thanks Mike.

I forgot to mention about the sashi in my reply to Mike koiczar. The sashi of this kohaku has shown clearing up in the latest photo. I am fairly certain many areas of sashi will clear (they are mostly 1-scale sahshi) except for those on the anterior part of the last patch. I am keeping my fingers crossed on this.

Cheers.
