Dick,

I don't know for sure, Aki could be a Hawaiian derived name, but nowadays its so hard to tell with Hawaii's great mixing pot. It could actually be derived from a Chinese/Hawaiian name. Even though Aki can be a hawaiian word, much like Akai can be a Japanese word or a Hawaiian word. Its really hard to tell. There are many family names in Hawaii that have been mistraslated when immigrants came from Japan, China, Asia, etc.

Sorry for mudding the water. I can ask some one here about Aki as a Japanese name.

Aloha,
Carl

Dick:

Carl was real close... Aki, pronounced "Ah Key" is a Hawaiian/Chinese name... In the old days, when a Hawaiian Woman married a chinese man they often took a surname with the prefex A (Ah)... so Aki, Afong, Awana, Ahuna are common Hawaiian/Chinese names...

Alii is the non gender title for royalty...

Hawaiian Surnames ending in Kalani usually denotes royal heritage... I had an uncle, Joe Kumukoa who was hanai'd (adopted) from the Halekalani family who were royalty on Molokai... The fact that he was an heir to a royal land grant from Kamehameha the Great, attests to this fact...

Aloha! Mike

To add to the mix...there indeed is a feminine name "Aki" in Japanese as well.

Yet Another Welcoming Party

Konichiwa,

I guess my welcoming party is not over yet because as of this morning, Typhoon Bayan is now approximately 7-8 hours away from hitting our little Kanagawa area. Already business establishments and shop keepers are locking down their places in preparation for the Typhoon. The rains and winds have started this morning and I expect it to pick up speed during the late evening hours. Batten down the hatches. I guess it will be an early night if the power goes out. I wish I had my old issues of Koi-Bito with me to read by flashlight. Hahaha.

Started driving a friends car around yesterday...keep left, keep left, keep left...its actually not that bad. Just have to remember to look right first, before proceeding: VERY IMPORTANT! The other thing is the turn signals, how many times do you think I flipped the wind shield wiper blades on in instead of the turn signal? Gets kind of embarrassing, especially if it wasn't raining yet. Hahaha.

Hi Carl,

I'm sure we are all a little envious of you, but I suppose you do have to do some work while you're there! It's not all fun and vacation I suppose.

Would love to read a diary of your events with pictures as well, be really cool to share your experiences.

Should you purchase Koi to grow on, if they get 'finished' perhaps the breeder can sell them on for you? Some UK dealers buy Koi, grow them on and they never reach these shores! Top quality stuff mind you.

Keep the story coming along - windscreen wipers - he he he

Odawara Castle

My first orientation field-trip to Odawara Castle.

In the feudal age, Hideyoshi Toyotomi, one of the most prominent samuri generals in the history of the country. Toyotomi rose from obscurity and unified the whole nation, conquering all the feudal lords of Japan at the time. With the collapse of the feudal system, Emporer Meiji, overthrew the Shogunate and restored imperial power to the throne in 1868. Upon the order of the Emporer, the great feudal castles had been destroyed one after another to strip the warrior class of power and most of their lands.

This castle complex has been put back together, piece by piece. Impressive task to undertake.

I also included a few pics of some of the tenants of the complex that you may find amusing. Looks like true Magoi and a few mutants.....hahaha

Aloha,
Carl
