Jasons, When I got the koi out the color in the center of the scale is a darker beni than inthe edge of the scale, I also know that the kh is around 2 Which I know is soft but we trickle water in all the time to prevent a ph crash. Which we have never had.

kind regards

Brake-san,
First of all I want to encourage you for you quest for knowledge.
Good black is more an issue of GH unhindered by any water quality issues that could contribute to a build up of nitric acid in unclean conditions.
Your on the right island to learn with the best on water quality outside of japan. click on Yume Koi and read some of his articles on water quality and see how it all goes together. Maybe Mike will get you an invite over for some hands on. Mike's the genuine article so don't be afraid to ask for his help!

Jason, Blake is fortunate to live in a soft water area, KH is low (around 3 if I remember). I pay a fortune for what comes out of the tap in their small village.

This just has to be put down to one of those things!!

Normally beni loss is an induced thing, caused by a stressor, such as parasites or water quality issues. But in this instance, neither of these are the case.

I think it was just due to Brake san being away from home and the sanke pining for him.

My advice is to take a photo and show Toshio when you visit him this harvest!!!!!!!

Maurice.

I urge some caution with just keeping an eye on KH. You avoid pH crash but the pH may still move around quite a bit, causing stress to the fish. I have similar water (low KH, pH around 7.8 in pond, 8.2 from tap, no GH) and I did notice that sometimes my pH would jump around (it would go higher in evening; above 8.6).

I add GH back to the pond in the form of calcium chloride; only 20-40ppm (1 or 2 dGH). The pH stabilized at 7.8 with this new augmentation.

As a background task (AKA one I may look at once in a while) I'm trying to get a handle on the factors that affect pH and how those can be separate from KH and GH. I'm sorry but all I know right now is that there are cases, and not just from my own pond, where pH can swing wildly with reasonable KH in the pond.

The color being stronger in the center of the scale may mean it'll come back when the fish stops growing so fast and this is just a case of color not keeping up with growth.
