Oh, Maurice, how I'd like to raise up a couple of those just to watch what happens.

I cannot say anything about the domestic U.S. breeders who try to do quality breeding other than my perception, particularly in regard to Quality Koi and Lotusland.... McCann and Brandwood: extraordinarily hard working fellows who each have a vision of where they want to go. In just a 5 minute conversation you know there is tremendous drive to reach the goal. What goal? Well, each has his own. The goals are not the same, but both strive for excellence. I am having great fun watching the development of Brady's Showa this season; and, in past seasons it was McCann's fish I enjoyed. (I still wonder about "horseface", Matt) Neither has gotten where they want to go. I'm enjoying watching them. Will either reach the level of being called "the American sakai"? .... I'm happy to wait, watch and see.

Stan, I have witnessed 2 well known breeders want to take 2 koi for breeders back home. So I can't say 100% if they can or cannot. 1 was a showa at a a koi show judged by a Japanese breeder. and gte other is this pure white Giin Rin Shiro Utsuri..

Maurice,
I was going to be very koi-coy, and say how good the first and third fish looked....and you have to go and be honest.
But yeah that middle fish would be munchin pellets and suckin' oxygen outta the pond just like its two sisters here in the states.....and I imagine if that middle one was swimming around the 20 Quid tank, seasoned koi hobbyists would be quick to get out their mad money.

This was discussed a few months ago at:
Can "Domestic Koi" get to the level of GC at America Koi Shows?

With all due respect to Maurice and the other talented breeders in the western world, I still think it all comes down to numbers, percentages and probabilities. The probability of a GC being bred in the west is a function of the number of fry being raised in the west versus Japan. Anything is possible but, based on shear numbers, the odds strongly favor the Japanese at present.

A factor which would increase the odds of a US-bred GC is increased demand for high quality Japanese koi in other parts of the world (the Pacific Rim, Europe, wherever). Since US-bred koi tend to stay within the country, the Japanese advantage based on their larger numbers is effectively diluted as the US becomes a proportionately smaller market segment.

That's what I was trying to say all along. Good wording!

Due to the ongoing concerns with KHV, members of the All Japan Nishikigoi Shinkokai have been asked by the association to refrain from importing koi to Japan. This request is referred to a a "self imposed restriction", a common practice in Japanese industry.

This restriction also prevents Shinkokai members from reimporting Japanese koi that have been previously exported.

These restrictions could conceivably come under attack now that the All Japan Show has adopted the biosecure "My Pool" (similar to English) style of showing koi, but for the moment, there does not seem to be any realistic reason to mount a serious challenge.

Anyone attempting to carp or koi to Japan today faces not only serious restrictions, but the wrath of the entire koi industry.....Guess it would have to be a real special koi.
