Right, now i think i have a grasp of the meaning of Kieto.

Tomoin is the true bloodline

and Monjiro is the Kieto.

I would say that Yagozen is a bloodline as opposed to a Kieto.

taxonomy

Keito would be a Hybrid or Variety name then maybe? If Cyprinus carpio were bread together to create a genetic strain or bloodline further divided called a Hybrid or Keito.
If Cyprinus is Genus, carpio is species, the next breakdown would be Hybrid (name) registered than Variety (name) not registered

Yagozen,...

Characteristics of Yagozen type include a "bright" red, over a white skin that glistens like snow flakes, and distinctive face shape and body shape, maruzome kiwa, and small sashi, a more elegant impression rather than bold impression overall. Tosai look very red and catchy, near "finished" look the first year, then as they grow, particularly females, will revert to more of an orange beni look, then slowly mature to a bright very red beni.

Best Wishes,
Brady Brandwood

Yagozen,...

Yagozen type Kohaku tosai on the right. Notice how the face shape is different than the faces of the other two tosai, also, the differences in the beni (same age, same water conditions, same diet).

Best Wishes,
Brady Brandwood

Yagozen characteristics,...

Another Yagozen type tosai Kohaku. Same distinct white, same distinct facial shape, same bright red beni patterning - but born a year later than the Kohaku above right.

Best Wishes,
Brady Brandwood

Brady, would you explain what distinctive face shape you were referring to ? I am assuming not the pattern on the face.

Thanks,

Face shapes,...

Hi paulino88,

Koi lines, (family pools, lineages, groupings) carry distinctive characteristics,... and among the more prominent of these characteristics are the shape of the Kois face, and the body shape - the distance between the eyes, the distance from the shoulder (where the scales start) to the tip of the nose, the size of the snout all make up the shape of the Koi's head. Some are long, some are pointed, some are thick and chubby, some will have eyes that are sunken and surrounded by fat, and on and on,... and these characteristics can be grouped into categories, and these "shapes" will often coincide with a particular "line" or lineage,... regardless of the breeder. These characteristics are what allows a breeder to choose and build or breed a Koi with a "look" that he wants to see - and these characteristics allow hobbyists to choose Koi with a look that they enjoy.

This is the classic Yagozen face shape. If you look at the shape of this Kohaku's face and look at the faces of the other Yagozen type Kohakus I posted above you'll see a common facial shape, as well as other distinctive characteristics.

Best Wishes,
Brady Brandwood

Brady-

I thought Sensuke was associated with kamisori kiwa and Manzo was associated with maruzome kiwa.

Kiwa-ese,...

Hi Mike,

I'm not following you - many lineages show maruzome or scalloped type kiwa, and the position of kiwa will also change somewhat as the Koi matures. Where you comin from?

Best Wishes,
Brady Brandwood

Kamisori type kiwa - a close look at the texture of the scales on this Kohaku will give a hint of his age.
