Showing koi in summer time...

Wanted to bring this thread up as many are showing for first time this summer.

The weather is Hot so we have to look beyond normal procedures of bagging koi..

I wanna get a list of do's and don'ts

I'll pitch in once it gets going...

Being this is the first time I am moving fish, it will be interesting. By Oct. it may be cool, but then again 2 yrs. ago we had 100 degree weather up until Nov.

I just ordered bags and that snazzy little banding tool, I have O2 available as well. I was planning on putting my stock tank(s) in the back of my truck and putting some water in the stock tank, and floating the bags tightly against each other in the stock tank to keep the water temp from getting to high on the trip. I am going to cover the stock tank with styrofoam sheet as well.

Seeing as how your going to be around why don't you come bag fish We'd probably be a bit under the influence for the drive by the time we got done bagging, but hey

Chris something can be arranged I am sure..

I would either box or not box..

Stock tanks work but are kinda hard sided..

The reason I would not float bags is you don't know how they are going to run in the water..

Boxes or bags should alway be sideways length wise to the direction you are traveling.. This will keep from brusing noses and splitting tails..

I will add more gotta go for a run..

Showing Koi in Summertime

I use a sock net to add the koi to a doubled-bag in a large plastic ice chest which I line with “egg crate” foam, especially at the front and rear. Each plastic bag is large enough for the koi to fit comfortably from head to the tip of the tail, without bending the koi, but not with so much room that the fish can turn around in the bag. Each bag has enough water so the fish “just” floats off the bottom of the inner bag and then the bag is filled semi-loosely with oxygen. Since beginning the use of foam to line the containers, I haven’t had a split tail or a bruised lip on a show koi. If the weather is REALLY hot, I put several layers of newspaper between the plastic bag and re-freezable ice packs at the top of the ice chest.

I use coolers and ice packs and oxygen. I've used Elbagin in the water previously but you must measure it- it will burn the fish if overdosed.

Here is the information I received from Peter Waddington, years ago...
Mike, thanks for email.

If you need an almost guaranteed method of totally healing damaged Koi after necessary antibiotic
injections have been made for - say - aeromonas problems then use the following:-

1. Salt at 5kilos per ton - built up over two days(4 lbs per 100 gallons)
2. Elbagin at 10grams per ton (equal to 1/8 teaspoon per 20 gallons or 10 tbs per 3600 gallons)
3. Water temperature at 78F or more.
4. Lots of natural daylight.

Keep this for 7 - 10 days, your Koi will shine!

Peter.

For shipping koi- the recommendation is 3 grams per ton.
