All my life and anyone that has ever had a hobbie of any kind will tell you that they get ripped off, and you know why, because we dont mind paying the price. Its a way of life, my turn Luke, you amaze me .

First, I'd like to say I'm in NY near NYC and early this year we built a 2,500gal pond. It was more of an addition to her Japanese Garden.(an afterthought)

I went through all sorts of Filtration systems, materials and concepts. Then I came across the BH systems and remembered reading from an old posting on a personal site stating an quote from a very old Koi keeper saying about "The Pounding of the Water".

Now we all know that does help in may areas of the ponds ecological system and we also know all about the benefits of Trickle Towers. So I decided to give the BH system's design a try but constructing my own version.

I use #3 55gal tool storage boxes stacked on grated plastic storage racks. Now I just used Lava rock just to see if there was at least a usable difference from this systems to all the other systems I have created. The Stack is fed by a 5,800gph sequence pump from ValuFlow.

We've been using this setup for 6 1/2 months now with no cleaning of the Lava rocks and I continually test the water for any changes and to this day the levels are perfect! I do do the 10% water changes per week.

We also have 16 Koi ranging from 9" to 14.5" and are fed 3 times a day and also given treats daily of an Orange quartered.

Now, some of the Local pond dealers here in NY have told me that with this setup I'm over stocked and that the Filtration system is inadequate for them. But then I show them the log book showing the dates and water testing and they ask what else am I doing?

One has to remember fishing as a kid with their Father. Walking up and down the streams seeing the water falls and remember how clear the water was and tasted better at them.

Around April of 2006 I am building a much larger pond and system to accommodate any new additions, plus the size will really show them off visually.

Here is what our proposed system dimensions will be:

15' x 38' x 5', 500gal settling tank or dual vortex chambers, Dual #4 stack Bakki showers either I design/build or the real macoys, BHM to stock all 8 trays, #2 5,800gph sequence ValuFlow pumps feeding the towers.

The approximate gallonage is: 10,000gal.

I was sceptical when first trying this BH system, but now I do see the results and hope that others see it as well.

one BS per 2000 gallons seems a bit off.. as does the comment about it not being able to handle 9000gph. Currently we have the "double wide" BS with BH media and it is running at.....9000 gph with no problems...

Just a quick post to tell our first time poster thanks for posting and sharing what you've learned. appreciate it!

My koi kichii and i have some more BH coming in that we're gonna split. I have run mine over a year and will add another 3 deck shower. he will be starting his up shortly.
I have watched products from japan marketed to their own koi folks and you know they always have something special/mysterious/scientific included in the hype. magnets to turn the water molecules from the "magy" units, FIR, etc.
or a food product from hundreds of feremnted plants and all the benefits.

I look at people like mike S, Cliff neale and others who use the product and
demonstrate that it works and I focus on their reports and my own experience
rather than theory. The Momotaro name brings with it an association of advance
for koi breeding and preparation for shows. I couldn't see them undermining their own efforts by hyping product that didn't work for themselves or current or future customers.

That is a very good point Dick, noone with their level of success and the brains needed to reach it would undermine their own fuiture by making erroneous claims. The risk and potential loss would be too great, and their accountants and wives would probably not allow it!

Maybe you misunderstood my post...

My "Test" system with 3 Trays works perfectly with using ONLY Lava Rocks. And I'm sure as I replace the Lava rocks with BHM I will see it's full potential.

1 Stack 4-trays will handle up to 5,000gal and duals will handle up to 10,000.

This comes right off http://www.keirinponds.com/filtration.php web site who sell the Bakki Showers here in the USA and also talking to John MacDonald of Keirin at a Koi show in D.C. earlier this month.

Now my "Better Half"(LOL) says it NEEDS to be bigger! Oh well, She has completely fell in love with Koi keeping. I've always had fun rearing all sorts of aquatic life.

A Note... I also am put off by all the BH and BHM bashing. Yes, we all have our Opinions but ripping apart a product without any evidence showing it doesn't work is just as bad. So if your motives are negative or trying to counter-sell I'm not buying and I'm SURE others here aren't as well.

We will be putting up our own site showing the Progress of our construction and of course... our Koi. I will keep you all informed for the URL!

Great to see some 'good news' post on the Showers and BHM at last. Nice to see people using the products, even home-made, then coming to 'real' conclusions.

I've run a BHM shower for 18-months now, have now bought another and am just about to get a double unit (maybe two). So over the Autumn/Winter, I'll be converting to a fully showered pond, ripping out my larger K1/Matting filter.

Having had a few 6-hour round trips to see ponds using the showers and how well they are working, who cares about the maths/science - they work and are so simple and virtually maintenance free.

I couldn't be happier.

All of these threads and I dont think that I have seen anywhere with BH Specs other than flow rate.

1. So can some one tell me the dimensions or square inches of each tray?
2. And how many cubic inches of BH or Lava Rock is placed into each tray?
3. How deep is the media in each tray (saves me doing the math)?
4. Flow rate (just to have it all in one place)?
5. Anything that I missed?

Thanks.
