Koi Preparation for Katrina ???

Are there any KB members from New Orleans? If so, just wondering how
do you prepare your pond and koi for hurricane Katrina?

I live in The Redlands Fl. and the little monster went right our heads. Your going to have to connect a gas pump on your well when power is lost. If your on a closed system, put screen over pond to keep tons of junk out and get a generator that works to fire up your pumps and stop feeding koi now. If your area floods than thats a whole new ball game. Your up the creek. I was talking to Mr. Purdin 3 hrs. before we got blasted. Little did we know that viper would be heading his way next 3 times as big.

If you are in the path of Katrina AND reading this post this afternoon, you are nuts!

Get out of there. Worry about the fish later, when you are trying to find out if you have a home any more.

For those only near her trajectory, LeeB and I and others have posted on Koiphen and NI. ...I'm at work today & can't take time to repeat it all. Good luck to you & your fish.

Yes, if you are in the path of Katrina, hope you already got out or plz get out soon as mandatory by the government mentioned in the news. Praying that all in Katrina's path stay safe.

Yes, family, life, and many others are much much more important to take care for Cat 5 instead if worrying about koi. I was wondering about "being prepared" for cat 5 as well as other like earthquake in CA.

Regards,

I'm near Atlanta, GA, and they are predicting a lot of heavy rain and possible flooding even up here. My backyard has crappy drainage so I fully expect a couple of inches of buildup, possibly enough to overflow into my pond. That's why I'm glad my koi are still babies... I just went out and bought a 55 gallon tank and moved them inside!

Valarc, where in the Atlanta area do you live? Im just south of you Hogansville, Ga. Worried my self about the storm, we have had so much rain trees could be a big problem for us if we get much wind. You know how the pine trees are when we have lots of rain, shallow roots on these trees really make a mess for us. Do you remember the last bad storm that came threw and blowed down all the pine trees? It was a mess for a long time and power outages were very bad. Took weeks to get us back up and running

I'm near Tucker, so slightly northeast of Atlanta. I know what you mean about the trees... the last big thunsderstorm had them down ALL OVER THE PLACE around here, and that wasn't even a hurricane! I've got a battery backup for my computer that I plan to transfer to the aquarium air pump if the power goes out.

Do you ever show any of your koi? I did not make the Atlanta koi show this year, I wanted to but have to much going on so I could not go. Now I have bumbed up my right knee draining my first mud pond and trying my hand at culling, fell down the side of my pond and now I have to have surgery on my knee. Going to set me back a few weeks or more.

The atlanta show hasn't happened yet this year It's a couple of weeks from now.

As far as showing koi... HA! I'm a total newbie and none of my fish is over 6 inches. For that matter, none of them cost more than 6 dollars
