What is a "High End Hobbyist"?

What would your definition of a "High End Hobbyist"?

To me a high end hobbyist is one who spends "x" amount of money on a fish.

To me a high end hobbyist would be someone who not only spends x amount of money on a fish, but has the knowledge to keep that fish valuable and not ruin it.

High end on the money scale for sure, but to me it's a person that has the will power and good judgement to be able to keep 10 koi or less and purchase one super koi each year. The opposite of my style of rapid fire hip shooting fill the air full of lead technique.

I agree with you Valarc, money can buy a nice fish, but knowledge and good koi husbandry skills will keep that fish's value.

Kingkong and Valarc have given excellent definitions.

But....."High End Hobbyist" on what scale?

In Kentucky, a person that has what could be classified as a koi pond....a few thousand gallons, deep, some decent filtration and some koi you could point to and call by 3 or 4 of the variety names we know, that person would be called a 'High End Hobbyist' here compared to the thousands of other people in the state that have a pond at their home. You would probably call them a newbie.

In Kentucky, what you and Kingkong and Valarc and others on Koi Bito would call a 'High End Hobbyist' would be called a 'Fish Idiot' here!

My idea of a "high end hobbyist" would be more then just money spent on koi. I think anyone that has a much higher knowledge then the average koi keeper about koi, filters, water quality, appreciation etc would be considered a high end hobbyist. Of course, I think the key word is hobbyist. Anyone can buy high end (expensive) koi only a high end hobbyist will know what to do with it though. Of course I could be wrong which would be pretty typical .

IMO, Knowledge, persistence, skill,$ spent, etc are all rough ways to tell the "high end" from the middle and low "end" hobbyists.


How about skill as the most important one, because not everyone has the eye, and skill to turn a small, relatively inexpensive koi into a pretty darn good koi. That person(s) has my attention.

Personally I think money means absolutely nothing. People living in America would spend $10000 on a pond system that would cost me more than double that over here, how is that relevant? Any rich kid can throw 10's of thousands of pounds at their fish but it doesn't make them koi keepers.

Experience, knowledge, experience, dedication, passion and experience are what make 'high end hobiests', not money.
