Steve, I have the picture up now on the post just above. You can see that the original ones do indeed rust.

CIM is abbev. for Commercial Industrial Membrane. IT is a two step water proofing material that looks like glossy rubber when dry.
You can use 3/4 plywood, screw it into the basic frame shape for housing BH, order plastic black or gray grating for the bottom and spray or roll on CIM as a wet paint. It will dry as thick as 1/4 inch if you like and be completely water proofed.

How about total luminous transmittance Polycarbonate plastics that can be bonded with epoxy.

I made my own SS Bakki. Only 3 tier but holds about 40% more media then the standard 4 tier. I can make it and sell it for alot cheaper then the commercial units. Better still its bolt together instead of welded so it can be shipped normally without a lot of added expense.

hi guys

the stainless has to be 316 marine grade any other grade will rust especially if salt is added to the pond even 314 will rust. Mine shows no signs of rusting or blistering. But if you are on a budget you should go diy. You can always use milk crates and line the inside with pond liner so water doesn escape the sides and drop back to the next tier of crates.

Aquitori if you are using bins use a layer of egg crate to hold the media up and off the drilled holes that way you get better distribution and no chance of any of the media being submerge.

I know from my previous 13 years working for a Japanese engineering company that U.S. steels and Japanese steels don't always have the same composition/ratio of ingredients. Japanese steel performance can generally be within the range of a common U.S. steel such as 304SS, but usually have a little "extra" of something here or there that makes for interesting/unpredicted reactions when used in a system...
