80cm Quest questions for Mike Sneaden...

The article is interesting but I had some questions....
1. Was this survey tired with fish out of Niigata Breeders? Meaning that all of the fish on the survey were from Southern Japan Breeders...

2. Were these fish in the survey feed with Momotaro food or Mix? Excuse me if I don't rememeber the pervious article if you did?

Last question not pretaining to article...On a 2000 gallon pond what would be the ideal amount of Bacteria House to use?

Thanks,
Tony.

I'd like to add to this subject and ask what's the largest size koi anyone's see raised out of a 10 ton pond with excellent water conditions and filtration?

Cool a question I might actually be able to answer! From reading through all the Bakki posts it would seem that for 2000 gallons you should use one stack of trays with 60-100kg of BH media and you should flow at least 3000gph over it (1.5x). Of course that answer is not from actual experience but from reading about others setups.

I have a friend in the koi hobby that makes a living out of building things from stainless. When the showers first came out I designed some changes to the original from my own learning and had him build me two sets of three tiers. About 1/3 the cost. I would think that if you could find some "ld" BH without the holes drilled in them you would have a "wiggle" point to work for better pricing.... My intent is to fill the next 3 tier unit with the new hole stuff and see what i can learn for a difference. I'll like the one i have currently running. My babies have doubled in size in 2 months. I had one jump out and within 2 days you couldn't tell it from the others. the first day it was quite red and not eating. the second day you could hardly pick it out and it was back eating and by the third, doesn't look like anything ever happened.

Weird stuff, the same happened to my Showa..It jumped out and was covered all in dirt, nearly dry...put in the pond got it all cleaned up, the fins were all bloodshot and today normal..and that was yesterday...I know for damn sure that Showa would be dead the next day....Weird stuff this Bacteria House is....

Another Question on the 80cm quest.

Firstly, a great article - I especially liked the details on body shape and how this could indicate future potential. This is just the sort of thing I like to read, to enable a more educated choice on the next koi purchase.

The question I have is about the temperatures the koi are kept at through the year to achieve these outstanding growth rates and development? I don't recall metion of this in the articles and I'm sure this must have a significant influence on the growth rate?

Many Thanks
Paul Trinder.

On Momotaro's web page, it says they use 300kg for a 20 ton pond. 1200 kg for a 100 ton pond. I remember Keirin recommend a 4 tiered tray(double wide, 24") with 200kg of BHM for 10,000 gallon pond.

I use one set of this double wide on my 2500 gallon pond, due to high stocking level. I plan to use two sets of double wide 4 tiered shower with 500 kg on my main pond pumped directly from bottom drain.

With normal stocking level, I would say 100 kg of BHM will be sufficient.
