new to the site

hello all, i am new here. i was hoping you guys could help me. my grandma has a pond in her back yard i would say is about 3000 gallons. she has been gainning intereset in putting koi in it, and im and going to get her all set up on it cause i can get deals on pumps and filters cause i use to work for a pool and landscaping company.
i was wondering for someone in a limited budget what would be the best filter setup and what type of media or filtration should i use? to work with the fish. the other problem is the water is well water so it already has lots of bacteria and junk in it? anyone in th California bay area know of a good place to get koi at? we dont want to get to expensive but good quailty. thanks

Hi Var
And welcome to Koi Bito
you can get your exact gallons by measuring width, length depth multiply all by 7.5 should give you a close enough number. Our clubs web site has a calculator to give water volume.. www.koikichi.org
Also do some research on filtration and pumps, most swimming pool pumps are very high PSI, and are not recommended for koi pond use. They are very expensive to run 7/24.. Also sand filters are not recommended either, they get like concrete inside from the fish food and waste. ( sand filters do polish water very nicely) but not good filtration for ki ponds. You can try Genki koi or Champion Nishikigoi they are both in Northern California. Both are very reputable dealers and a pleasure to do business with.

thank you so much, the price to run them is a problem cause my grandma lives in the country if you can believe that there is still country in california but where she is its just one straight rate and no difference for what time you do things like most parts of california.
is there and type of media or cartridge or bead that you would recommed to run in a filter? ? i wasnt planning on running sand i was going to talk to my old boss cause he has done ponds/ koi ponds to see what he would recommend. thanks again

Var welcome to the board first off, since you are from my neck of the woods it would be easy to suggest dealers to you in the Bay Area....First off what part of the Bay Area are you from? This will make it easier to point you to the closest dealer....

while your learning consider getting the strongest color varieties. Like yamabuki, Chagoi, shusui

Cool, I know that area....You have PSkoi in that area and Concord Pet and Feed...whoelse hhhmmm....Well have you been koi shopping in San Jose? If you need consulting on fish I am always availible, I usually hangout at Champion Koi or Genkikoi...these 2 dealers are highly recommended by me if you are looking for koi.
