On the other hand, the kohaku has the body conformation to grow VERY large. Long head and excellent conformation especially from midline to the tail joint.

Don't get me wrong bro - I'd kill to have either one swimming in my pond. You are correct about the scarcity of sanke of this caliber - but kohaku of this caliber are very far and few between too. I'll let you know what I find in Japan .

Your right with the Sanke to some extent Mike, but considering the Sanke is in a bowl it has the pecs forward to get it lift from the bottom...so it is actually trying to move backward in the bowl. To me the slight pinch is okay, it might have a chance to grow big considering the size of the head compared to the lenght....but the size of the shoulder on the sanke gives it a more profound conformation that the rest. Mike have fun in Japan and keep us up to date with what you find...

B-C-A

I have no idea which is the best and will probably never own a koi of this quality. Nonetheless, here's my picks....

Regardless of its history or reputation, I do not like the conformation on 'A'. Those protruding noses are not very appealing to my eye. I think someone once called it a "dolphin nose" or "porpoise nose". Looks like a proboscis monkey. Also, I do not like the transition from head to body - it's severely pinched and does not form a smooth line.

'B' and 'C' are very close.

'C' has a nice clean pattern although the first step is a little too heavy. The conformation is thin, but it has nice smooth lines. The small pectorals are a turn-off.

'B' is a little too full-figured for my taste. Is it lop-sided and a little more pot-belly on the fishes right side? It may be coming into the spawning season and would be a better looking fish later in the year. I like the sumi placement, particularly on the face, but think showa should be black-based and have more sumi overall; plus motoguro.
