Well, the smart thing to do is always buy yourslef a book. Its a a good reference to have to have you on your way to learning. If you join a club then they are always not in reach at the time you need your questions asked. Not that I am against clubs but you will need book at sometime in your koi keeping experience. Or you can check one ou twith the club you join.

The old koikichi book by Peter Waddington is always a standard to have on yor shelf and is reasonably priced nowadays.

Or liek some others have said. Post pics of what yo got. We like a good challenge..

If you have a net I would use that. There is no need to drain the pond if you have a net. If you have a rubbermaid container fill it with pond water and put the fish you catch in there and start taking pics. Make the rounds to the dealers and checkout what they have. All of the dealers are pretty knowledgable. Like keokoi suggested KoiKichi book the book goes for around $45 and it is the pretty much the bible of koi.

Well, to take pics of koi you really don't need too tub or net them. This is extra stress that the ko ido not need. Curious why you need to drain the pond?

Fuzz,
If you live in SF South Bay Area, you can attend the weekly koikichi class
by Mr. Aquitori held at Champkoi on Sat afternoon. It is free for new koi hobbyish.;-))

However, before taking Mr. Aquitori's koikichi class. Please DO NOT drain your
pond to take pictures of your koi. This is NOT a good way to take pictures of
your koi.

Best regards,
--Dinh

Why not get the book titled "Koi" written by Grant Fujita, it costs $35 and is avaiable at the Koi USA Bookstore.

I only wish I had half the knowledge as my good friend Mike Perret...Fuzz, Mike is probably one of the most knowledgable hobbyist in the Valley and he is associated with the Santa Clara Koi Club, I think a weekend talking to him will help you understand why we do this hobby...
