Breeders in Japan

If you could only pick one breeder in Japan to get a koi from, who would it be, and way?

would have to be Sakai Hiroshima i suppose. they produce practically every type except asagi and purachina, and seem to cater for every kind of budget from cheap end yet decent koi right up to the very best.

personally, i have a soft spot for momotaro cause he's the only breeder i know directly but i shop at the lower end and so far in my experience i get better bang for the buck from Sakai.

Gotta say Ogawa and tay consistent.. If only one..You gotta give us at least 3 man.. This hobby aint about 1 breeder.. If it was.. then it would be not as colorful..

A few year back I posted a thread like this and a lot of people said Shintaro along with Sakai Hiroshima. I have not seen his name used much anymore. Is he still putting out some of the top koi?

I understand Shintaro was basically wiped out in the quakes. He is rebulding though from what I understand.

Who is the breeder? That's a difficult question! It depends on wich kind of koi you're looking for. But my favorite breeder for the moment is Sakai Fish Farm. We deal this fish for 5 years now and this quality is really superb.
Sakai has many koi of high quality. His Kohaku are really the best I've seen, He has some nice Sanke and very nice Showa. He has also some other koi of high quality like Chagoi, Soragoi, Ochiba, Kujaku, Shusui ...
Also the bloodlines he uses are really nice.

Other great breeders are Ogata, Ogawa, Dainichi, Sakai Isawa ...

I hope this could be an answer on your question.

My man is Marudo. I read the interview of Sakai(Isawa). The interview was not very revealing and I too got a little turned off by Sakai. Marudo has the quality of koi and the variety and the personality and the humbleness to match what I want from my top breeder in Japan.
