Alot of things alluded to

Can I buy a Koi cheaper in Japan than the same Koi here in the US...OF COURSE! BUT..... The delaer I go with will get me HIS very best price, the same as he would pay if he was buying the Koi. Then I pay a commission...21% plus expenses to get the Koi to my home. Even with all of that, I am still buying the Koi cheaper than what I could from his shop. I take the risks, its my captial investment etc. Now, once you throw the trip cost itself in, of course I am now paying substantially more, but I would for a vacation elsewhere anyway. Then throw on the endless selection alternatives not available at the "shop" and the invaluable learning lessons that occur throughout the trip and these added expenses end up being trivial in the grand scheme of things....even if they are expensive.

Too many variables I think. If you are going to buy 1 koi and you are an average hobbyist then clearly its cheaper to buy from a dealer then it is to fly to Japan to buy that 1 koi. Now if I am looking to buy a GC or a bunch of super high quality koi then it would be cheaper to go to Japan plus the selection would be much better. So I guess it really depends on what you are after. Of course there is always the middle ground. Know the dealer and have him look for you while he is there. Then again how can you put a price tag on the amount of knowledge you might gain from a buying trip to Japan?
