Koi I'm Planning to Buy...

Hello everyone;

A buddy of mine is holding these koi for me until I'm ready to purchase them next month. They range in size between 12" and 14" in length. I was just curious to see what you guys think of these koi. I'm particularly fond of the green sparkly one...I've never seen one like this before. Granted they aren't necessarily show quality koi, but I'm getting them at a really great price. Any opinions or feedback are appreciated...

Yeah the second fish is longfin for sure.. The Kohak is not.. It throws you a little because of the lead pectoral rat stands out..

Best of Luck!

Kohaku is cool looking? Are these fish domestic? What is the good price you are getting them at? To me a good price would be no more than $50 for both...

I kinda like the kohaku. the red has already arrived, so is probably a rmale with that color so early, but white is sterling. I'm not much of a longfin fan, but it sounds like you like the color it breings to the pond.

aquitori;

I see you're from NorCal, so maybe it's different there. But here in SoCal, you will NEVER find any koi of this size - regardless of colors, bloodlines, etc. - for $25 each. The are both between 12" and 14" in length. I believe both koi are males; although I was told the kohaku is a female so maybe I'm wrong. It definitely looks like a male to me in the picture though. I have no interest in entering any koi shows or, for that matter, spending the kind of money it would take to add a bona fide show-quality koi to my pond. I'd be getting an excellent price compared to what similar fish are being sold for in my area. Thanks for the feedback, however.

True cost of Koi

I took a brief look at your ponds, they look very good. It appears that you are already very overstocked, 32 Koi in 2500gallons. Well within the pond's capacity when you are talking about tosai, but Koi are only tosai for one year.
The typical tosai that I buy is ~6-8" which may end up ~15-20" by the end of the year. So your koi are going to quickly outgrow your pond. You shouldn't put much value on there size, since they are likely stunted older fish that could be a disadvantage anyways. The difference in a typical smaller tosai 6-8" and a 12-14" is about 2-3 months of warm water. The cost of those is not just the upfront cost, but the cost of the investment in your ponds in money and labor, in electricty and food. I think if you consider all of this many Koi (those with low future potential) if they were $1 each would cost way to much.

Ryan;

Thanks for visiting my site. Sign my guestbook, why don't cha? Anyway, I'm already aware that I'm overstocked - in fact, I even note it on my site. Most of the "experts" I've spoken with recommend 250 gallons of swim area per koi. My mom is finishing a 10,000 gallon pond at her house so I'm planning to give her some of my koi once it's finished. I don't think the koi's growth is stunted, however. Both koi are only one year old and already measure 12" - 14". The parents were huge; I've seen them. Most of my koi currently measure less than 6" in length. As they grow older, however, I will probably keep my favorites and give the rest to my mom. Thanks again... -Joseph

You are correct in regards to what you want in your pond, it's your pond. Now if a good friend is giving you the koi at a good deal then you must have been offered the koi at a greater price than $50 for the both. If it were me and I was a good friend I would had offered the koi to you for free... That's my take on it. Well anyways, if the koi make a strong impression on you then get the fish regardless of price or what I or anyone else thinks. Anyways, have fun with your hobby and I hope my opinions don't rub you the wrong way.
