For me the journey has been long - enjoyable most of the time and frustrating at other times. Luckily the good times outweigh the bad 100 fold
Anyway, my main mentor was a breeder here in the South Bay area. His name was Kiyohide (douglas) Miyashita. I met him in 1973 at a local club meeting I was invited to. Little did I know, and I knew damn little then, that the guests of honor would be Dr. Kuroki and Konishi-san from Konishi Yorijo. I guess Douglas took a liking to me and we spent many hours of many days sitting next to a bathtub on his patio studying tosai that he would bring up from his mudponds so he could teach me about how to select the best ones, about the parents and how the whole cycle came together. He even allowed me to assist in spawning rites one season. He, if he is still living, would be over 90 now. He sold his farm a few years ago. All the ponds have been graded over and the green houses are slowly becoming delapedated by time and neglect. There are semi trucks parked on the grounds now, but the house that he built, complete with tatami mat floors still stands as a testament to his fortitude and love of koi and life.
