Fukerin is why I like asagi, and toshio's matsunosuke line go sanke.

wonder how many were surprised to learn it's the skin and not the scale!

and it ain't gin rin either (scale)!

was helping a friend move some older pond quality koi last sunday and found an asagi with silver fukerin. caught my eye right away!

All my friends are getting ready to go to Japan. It's the time i try and comfort myself by saying I can't help it if i'm good looki' instead of rich...( then my bride of 35 years reminds me) " Honey, I don't want to be the first one to tell you but you missed out on both counts! LOL!

What I don't understand is why it seems to be desirable to have a koi that has it. I have a pond full of muts and most of them have it...

Fukurin [foo-koo-rihn], litterally: margin.

Combination of skin and scale when a) the middle layer skin grows from under a scale to partially cover an adjacent scale, or b) when the upper-layer skin of a scale grows to partially cover an adjacent scale.

Arthur,

I agree with your explanation, it is very well stated.

But I was told, by a Japanese that the literal translation of Fukurin was
Fuku=thick and Rin=scale refering to the skin you mention.

I doubt it matters much, but its a good aide to memory.

jackie some fish have automatically, such as a yamabuki. Where as when a Kohaku or Sanke develop it, it adds lustre to the overall fish and is quite diserable.

Fukurin does not always enhance the look of a fish, does it? I would think only when it is especially attractive/metalic/has wonderful color.

It is what makes the koi shine. Jackie.. would love to see some pix of your koi,. I thought we had nice koi with good skin until I saw one that really really did. Then when it got home, and shared the pond with the others that were thought high of, it got hard to even see them. The difference is so stark. It is NOT a metallic quality IMO.

Now, I can't have anything else, dammit

WEll I'm proud of my pond mutts and as G knows show them off all the time. Not a prize winner here but healthy well fed fish. Neither parent had fukrrin so odd that the babies did, or not, hard to tell with koi. Sorry couldn't find a better pic of her right now
