It can, the problem with alot of the breeders was what happened in the earthquake. KHV will be around for awhile, so I suggest making donations to the AKCA fund to find a quick cure to this...

Speculation does little good and may be counterproductive - so I will speculate anyway. If they are holding off on killing the fish (infectious time bombs) then there may not be an active outbreak and they may have some reason to doubt the diagnosis. A false positive perhaps? Was this episode triggered by large die-offs at the farm, or just routine testing?

Met with a friend from Osaka and she told me that stories of KHV in the southern area of Japan were being reported by the news media... This was this past August and she said both food and Nishikigoi were involved... Unfortunately she didn't have any other details, as she's not into koi...

Gutted!

What can I say? Words fail me. I wish all at Momtaro Koi Farm a speedy recovery from this and as quickly as possible. The open attitude shows how these situations should be treated and not brushed under the carpet. Momotaro leads the way again. Mike if you need any thing you have my number.

So if I am reading all the accolades of momotaro correctly the minstry of Agriculture (or whatever) wouldn't have gone public with the test results?
If they wouldn't then Momotaro is indeed playing it square, however I believe that the test results would become public information as soon as the results were verified......and therefore Momotaro has made a wise business decision to come forth before word is released to the public.

I also feel remorse for the whole crew, I can only partly imagine how gutted they must feel.

But once again, I think more can be told....there has been no explanation of how this greenhouse of koi got infected...nothing of the practices that led to this famous, powerful, and learned Breeder having koi "show up" at his facility....That is the oddest bit... I can only think of two probable ways that KHV "showed up".

And as to what they do now....
Everyone has bad stuff happen to them and by them...it is what they do when bad things happen, not if bad things are going to happen that determines the character of the group or individual.

On a brighter note.....think about it.....

Momotaro will be the best place to buy koi from in the near future and beyond....They have had KHV reported once...and I am sure they are almost in a coma now. When they come out of that coma they will not want to ever replicate the feeling and will be diligent about preventing KHV in their Stock.
A second reporting of such a disease would be the absolute ruin of them however, and I believe they are aware of that.

I have to say that this news gives me pause. I had deluded myself into thinking that if I limited myself to quality dealers and breeders, I would have little risk of contamination.... so, no multi-month quarantine going through heat cycles at my house. Delusional, perhaps.

I hope it is just the one pond in the single greenhouse .... a carrier fish brought from outside, perhaps to be held until it could be shipped with others ... something of that sort. It would be heartbreaking if it was more intrusive. Such an incredible investment has been made in the Momotaro program and in aggregating the breeding stable, there would be a great loss to the hobby if it proves to be anything more.

....Besides, I want a Momotaro Kohaku.

HEY HEY HEY...
yeah HEY!

now here i the states quite a few breeders are going to great lengths to make sure KHV will not get to their farms. Brady won't even let you bring waders to his property unless he inspects them....and many guys have a one way driveway for koi.
So how did KHV get into that green house? it sounds like KHV is more common over there now than it was 2 years ago.....and that doesn't make any sense does it?
the Japanese Feds would have released the info about Momotaro having KHV. Will Momtaro tell us how they got it?
