well, I hear ya! And I feel your pain!!!
but in theory, do you think it matters at all --
The closed pond that runs very well and is maintained well
compared to
The flow through pond that never allows any real biofilter activity?

Wow Carlos, that is alot of money. $6000/yr just on power. You might need an Energy Management expert. Do you heat your pond or is that just from pumps and hvac on your house?

JR.-, I haven't read through enough of your PMs, threats, and 20 pages of past posts to know what you are referring to. You seem to have developed an unhealthy obsession with the whole thing. If you PM me exactly all your concerns though, I promise to respond in PM in a timely and respectful fashion. I won't be responding to you in the forum for everyone else's sake. Especially dtbh, I think he deserves that much respect?

Not that I would be confused enough to think you respected him, me, or the others on the thread though. I understand you are not capable of that at this point in your life. May your tomorrow be better? Anyway, give yourself a big hug from all of us here in PR.

It also means noone has to dive for hours to clean barnacles. Several lives a year were being lost just on those dives alone.

It is interesting to me that the fields of Energy Mangagement. ship maintenance, and FIR ferroelectric ceramics have merged. The result is a filter media that is unsurpassed in it's ability to utilize both qualities to affect water and waste. The Navy also had many problems getting it to work through certain plastics and metals, nescessitating the discovery of new composite materials. I guess that is why BH is in a bin not a baggie? The new line of ships will be the fastest, lightest hulled and long lasting hulled ships ever built. All thanks to FIR emitting ceramics developed in Malaysia and Japan. However, they are very careful and wise not to wrap the ships in plastic baggies. Maybe they read SMGs posts?
My wife wants to know if SMG has baggies for all types of emissions,

On our pond, running 2 years now I am trying to do both. Submerged matala in one filter, Biostrata in another submerged filter and 9 cu. ft. of lava rock in a shower with a flow rate of 4500 GPH. We also flow 15 to 20 GPH thru the system with a stocking rate of 1000 Gal. per fish. I am a suspender and belt type and a newbi to koi keeping, this being our first pond.

There is no question that this is an expensive hobby. And its pretty easy to justify and rationalize spending just a 'little more' to protect the fish under our care- especially if you add up the individual costs and realize that you are protecting a $20 M- $60M investment! Yikes!

But one area where even the 'only slightly handy' keeper can save a bundle is building their own filter system. Indeed, this is even where some of us have the most fun! I built those eight ft towers that Carl posted. The total cost is hard to figure as I did it out of a materials list from the house construction and sealed it with left over CIM from the pond sealing. The media was the greatest expense at about 17.00 a cubic yard! Not too bad!

hacnp, you're off to a great start! You will notice a lot of advanced types use both. You get the best of both worlds and lots of excess water capacity as well. Over the next couple of seasons your system will get stronger and stronger and eventually be very hard to knock down. Any pictures? JR

Thanks for the kind words, We have never had any reading of amonina or N2 or N3. We aged the water for 4 months before adding any fish at startup. What pics I have are mostly const. pics. posted on Koiphen. and also on a web site listed in my profile over there.

Thank you very much for showing some restraints.

I must thank all for contributing positively to this thread.

JR, I agree with you that viewership has increased tremendously with the heated exchanges. No doubt about that. We must see all sides of the story and come to our own conclusion(s). Now that all parties have presented their case I think any further discussion on FIR will do more harm than good to this hobby. Let us channel our energy to more interesting aspects of the hobby. I see you have now begun to share your vast knowledge with us. Thank you, JR. Please continue to do so.

Junglegeorge, I do not have any problems with water clarity after a thunderstorm (which we get plenty in Malaysia). This is one of the advantages I can see of a big filter vs a pure BS/BH system. I will compile the pros and cons of both systems at the end of the experiment.

Thanks again.
