Latest News from Momotaro

Hi

Just copied this from there site

¡Up Date 20 October 2005
On October 17th, the Ministry of Fisheries returned to our farm for the 4th time, this time to test every pond in 4 of our greenhouses. On October 19th we received the results and have acted accordingly by euthanizing infected fish.@So far, all our Nisai and older fish in our greenhouses have tested negative, with the exception of the September auction koi. We will continue to retest koi that show no symptoms of KHV even though they have tested negative for KHV in the past.
We have also received test koi, ones that are absolutely KHV-free and healthy, that we will add to all our ponds to see if they contract the virus from our koi. This is another way to test ponds that are not showing signs of KHV. So far, the 500 ton house, Male oyagoi house, and 1500 ton house have no signs of KHV and our records show that no infected koi were moved into these houses. All of our mudponds are in good health as well.
We now know that we contracted KHV from some koi we bought last winter to be used as potential parent koi. These koi were mixed with one pond of other koi at our farm. Using our records, we know where the exposed koi are and all have already been euthanized. We are not going to say who these koi came from, as it is everyonefs own choice to admit when they have a problem. We have chosen to be open about our KHV infection because we realize the importance of protecting ourselves, dealers, and customers from this problem in the future. Our focus is to eliminate KHV from our farm and get back to producing and raising the best koi we can.
We have been overwhelmed by the well wishes and offers of help from all over the world. We are working hard to continue to make high class koi that can be enjoyed the world over.

Regards
Chris

Thumbs up

You beat me to it Chris, but I will put this up on the main page as well. I would like to take my hat off to Momotaro for showing the true class that I've always known them to have through what to most people would be an absolutely untenable situation.

I hope that anyone else experiencing similar problems can follow this fine example. A rough month or two ahead, but i know that they'll be back and stronger than ever as a result of all of this.

i'm curious to know how many farms Momotaro bought their new parents from.
the matter now is wider than just Momotaro's farm, and we don't know which farm the KHV originated from as Momotaro can'tor won't name them even though they must have their suspects as they would know where they bought their koi from.
it's very touchy i can imagine, and they wouldn't want to be accused of slander etc but in the meantime i guess for some people like me it's time to refrain from buying koi for a while. it's not that i don't trust anyone, but i just love my current fish too much to take the risk of adding new koi while knowing that there are infected farms out there which we do not know about and who might be selling infected koi.
if anything, while no answers are provided from Momotaro's findings of other farms' infected koi, i suppose the safest place to buy koi right now is in fact Momotaro cause they're doing all the testing and being very public about this matter?

with this statement from Momotaro, rather than putting things to rest the situation has now escalated to practically every breeder who's ever had any dealings with Momotaro (and i can imagine that is a LOT). it'll be interesting to see if more farms volunteer themselves for testing after this.

In my view, it is no longer Momotaro we need to be worried about, it is the other guys who are not fessing up to their problems and dealing rightly with them.

I applaud their ethics and can only emphasize that good ethics ALWAYS pays off in the end. Good job guys, and plz let us know as soon as we can buy your high quality and trustable koi again!!!

Indeed George. Reminds me of a quote I heard a long time ago that sticks with me to this day:

"Integrity is what you do when nobody else is watching"

For those of you "in the know" a question:

I have heard that Momotaro is not allowed to sell koi for some months to ensure that the situation is in hand. The timing of that seems to suggest that they will shortly thereafter be in mud pond season. Does this mean that they will miss both this season and all of the time until the mud pond pulls next year?

I agree with you George. While we were in Japan many rumors were flying about certain breeders having KHV, I will not repeat these breeders names... But I will say that we did not go to visit them this year.
