KHV Testing & Certificates in Niigata

Most Breeders are very serious about protecting their facilities, Koi, and their customers. They are constantly being tested for KHV. Here is what the certificate looks like that they are granted when confirmed KHV free:

Just wonder who do the KHV testing? The governement agency or independent third party? Also, "constantly"? how long they repeat the testing?

The government does the testing. I'm not sure how often, but I know they are not allowed to ship anything that hasn't been tested.

That is a great news for koi hobbyists if it is true....

That is the main reason why I asked how often they proceed with the KHV testing.

For one year or more, anything can happen during that period.

The KHV testing signs remind me of similar signs that I saw during a visit to the red light district back in my Army days.

So as long as that Breeder hasent gotten any outside koi since March 10, you are ok.....

Unless koi are sick/dying from KHV the current PCR KHV tests cannot detect KHV. Koi must be held at optimal temps of 72-78F for two to three weeks to cause the KHV virus to multiply and cause illness for the PCR tests to have a chance of detecting the KHV virus. Koi are not held at anywhere near these temps in the Japanese koi houses I have visited.

Koi infected with KHV but then held at lower or higher temps will not become sick or testable until optimum temps are provided. Testing koi at lower or higher temps will deliver false negatives. This does not address the issues of KHV survivors/carriers that could infect new koi that are exposed to them.

Certificates are pretty much worthless - Testing cannot prove a koi does not have KHV only that it does have KHV.

Ray,

Will a koi which has been infected always break with the disease at 72-78F?? If a fish is in good health, strong immune system, good diet and good water, no stress, loving friends, etc. can it pass through the 72-78F window without breaking with disease??

A statement in the negative form cannot be proved. You can't prove that you are not in a certain place, you can only prove that you are elsewhere.

From TV, the suspect can't prove that he / she didn't kill the subject, he / she can only have an alibi.

You can't even prove that you are not somebody else, you can only prove who you are.

It cannot be proved neither that a fish or a farm hasn't been exposed nor that it isn't infected.
