Not good, SMG. If we each isolate ourselves, there is no hobby. Besides, just check the follow the banner ads to see the new ones being harvested this year. Leave all those to the rest of the world to enjoy? Naaaaah.

I am still enjoying the fellowship, Mike. I have many good friends and some mighty entertaining enemys in the koi world. Its just that I feel showing fish is too risky now. KHV is becoming so commom it is almost ubiquitous. The fish immune memory cell is very short lived. I wish yall luck with a vaccine but I'm not risking my pricelss pets for anymore plastic trophies. Got enough. I would rather enjoy my koi swimming free in a pine shaded jade green natural pond (with airation) and eat worms and crawdads plus what I feed 'em. They don't need to be shipped around in boxes and maybe get something that will kill em all.

Besides, have you seen the snow whites and fiery reds on the awesome bodies Bradys been shipping out of there lately?

I will show one more fish- the Brady Showa. Then she goes back to NC to be a broodfish, and so does KiKo. I'm happy enough.

It seems that fish returning from a show should go through the normal quarantine process - even if they are not exposed to another fish's cooties. The stress of being hauled around can cause a background level of parasites to become an intense case of parasites. There is a delicate balance between a fish's immune system and its normal parasite fauna.

Is Kiko a bekko? 'Kiko' means 'spot' or 'dot' in Hawaiian. Also the name of my half-dalmatian dog.

Sure you have to Q fish returning from a show and do it properly. But if one is exposed your whole show string, your best fish, are dead as hammers. Vaccine in fish- I don't have much faith in it. Their immune memory is too short.

I have a show string of 10 jumbos. Thats 10 giant coolers stacked two layers high in a pickup with a 1000 pounds of water at least. THIS little female is tired of loading and unloading this lot. Its exhausting. And for what? Some plastic trophies but they all might be killed by KHV? I raised these from babies. I know they're good, pardon my cockiness. Don't need that constantly validated.

KiKo (Kimitsu Konino ) is a 34" Kohaku bred from Sensuke and Yagozen bloodlines. Just the kind that Brady likes. How happy she would be living in a mud pond, eating crawdads and occassionally being embraced by the likes of "Jethro" or whoever.

We have something in common dude. I have a little chat with one of the dealers that I visited today about KHV. I made a little comment to the dealer that I will buy koi only if the dealer agree to donate some money for KHV Research funding???

Guess, what the dealer has said........?

.......

The dealer agreed to it. but

......................

he also said that, he will "overcharge" me to make up the donation;-)) Of course, he is just kidding.................................;-))

I have attended number of koi shows in the last few years; seeing vendors, dealers, and clubs were there for their ads as well as promotion their products. I was thinking about we should have some hard copies of KHV Information and KHV Research Project Flyers at the show too. This may help to bring KHV info to general public and possible to get some fund too.

I have 400 hard copies of the KHV deadly koi virus information; KHV research projects; and K-B support KHV funding flyer that Antonio Aquatorino
will help to bring to the Koikichi Koi Show on October 19-20, 2005.

The 2005 Koi-Kichi show chairwoman agreed to place somewhere visible on the information desk for any koi hobbyist to get and understand more about this deadly koi virus. If any of you attend the koi kichi show, please pick one for information.

Thanks,
--Dinh

While waiting for a call, I was surfing sites I infrequently visit and ended up at the site for the Japan National Aquaculture Institute. The English language site is very limited, but I noted 6 research projects concerning KHV. All were begun in 2004. They range from research on testing techniques and DNA to how the disease progresses. Other viral research not specific to KHV is also on-going. I found this interesting because I had not heard of there being any intensive government-sponsored KHV research outside the efforts subsidized in Israel. The more done, the better. ....a hopeful piece of info, I think.

Many thanks to all involved in helping Project KHV raise funds for KHV research. The current high bid for the Koi slate auction on this site is $2160 U.S. Special thanks to Brian and Dinh.

Unlike some who feel koi shows are about plastic trophies I undersand that Koi shows must continue to be supported to keep our koi hobby thriving. Without koi shows the development of show quality koi we all love would soon disappear to be replaced with cheap poor quality specimens. Koi shows have switched to English style tank arrangements and extraq special bio securiy is enforced. The amount of KHV risk certainly varies by activity but in decreasing order of risk here is a listing based on what we know today.

Adding new koi to your pond without proper quarantine
Showing koi in a Japanese style show or mixing your koi with other koi/carp

Proximity to wild koi/carp populations
transfer of KHV contaminated water from another pond

Showing koi in a English style show with proper bio security
Adding new koi with a proper quarantine

You could add to this list by expanding the number of koi bought and also buying from multiple sources

You are either part of the solution or part of the problem.

Koi shows are not about plastic trophies but they sure are about keeping your fish alive. You can Q post show all you want and still lose the whole string if one is infected. Good luck on the vaccine. You will need it. My fish are staying home. KHV has become all too common.
