regarding Hasegawa,

and the yellow heads mentioned, please check the video or dvd and then report back, otherwise your comments add nothing to the topic and are rather ignorant.

"a bowl of males" = check the video .

as for yellow heads being nothing, i dont agree.
as far as im concerned a koi with a yellow head is pretty ugly, sure it can look nice if perfect in all other areas but to me it does not make the grade.
kohaku are meant to be red and white, not red white and yellow!

as far as koi changing from a yellow head to a white head over time, yes this can happen, but it is not a certain bet, more like 50/50.

choose a koi whith the whitest head to start with, if you wish to have better odds. unless off course you like yellow heads

OK Kevan...

I just reviewed "Nishikigoi, the Movie" for about the 20th time....in particular, the section where my friend Peter is visiting Mr Hasagawa. Lesson number 1, you cannot judge Koi from pictures (Or video for that matter), you can only judge pictures of Koi from pictures. Lesson number 2, the Koi in the video are freshly harvested, still being in the sorting net (seine) during the video. Those that are familiar with mud pond harvests also realize that Koi "Clean-up" after a few days of being out of the mud and into a concrete pond. Lesson number 3, that video is circa 1997 and probably from the 1996 harvest. You can't even begin to compare Koi from 10 years ago to Koi being produced more recently.

I'm glad you prefer Ogawa....but I wouldn't be short sighted as it relates to others, Hasagawa included.

as mentioned other koi in the video have much whiter heads than the hasegawa, and please read this carefully.....including freshly harvested koi from other breeders

yes some koi will clean up to some degree when out of a mud pond and i expect including SOME of mr hasegawa`s,
many breeders are not overly concered with getting a pure white head but at the time of the video mr hasegawa was producing a new breed of yellow headed kohaku.

as i said perhaps he has improved over the years with new parent stock but hasegawa fans need not get so upset or make excuses, im just stating some simple facts.

The only comment I can make is that I grew a Hasegawa male Kohaku from nisai for two seasons and he was a beauty. The Hi was excellent. The Shiro was equally clean and white, excepting a cream tone on the nose typical of males. I moved him on when he "stuck" at 22-23" because I wanted to make room for a female Kohaku with greater potential for growth. One experience does not make for a general rule, of course.

I am not trying to "spank" you here. Only trying to enlighten you some. Do you think that perhaps the other Koi with whiter heads in the video could have been videoed in different lighting conditions? Even the time of day matters. Another tidbit for you. That open pond of Hasagawa's is for the Tosai he is selling off. His "keepers" are kept in his first floor of his home....an above ground basement of sorts. Don't get this confused with his Koi house either.

The bottom line is as I said previously....you cannot judge Koi from pictures. You can only judge pictures of Koi from pictures. Seeing live is believing. Everyone has their favorites. Heck, Hasagawa is not mine, but they are still a wonder to behold and to make uninformed statements based upon limited knowledge is being short sighted.
