For me the hobbyist begins and ends with Kohaku. If the price is more than $1000 I would spend my money on Gosanke.

My best is Kohaku. I started with Kohaku and still staying with Kohaku for the last 7 years;-)) It is just so simple, but so elegant.....

But John, it makes my day when seeing some special koi like that....

And John, just PM you for the asking price... ;-))

Matsukawabake got it's name from the villiage it was first developed in.....
matsu is pine in Japanese, Kawa was the river, Bake means changing or variable

that said matsukawabake varies the amount of black or white with the seasons
( and yes heavy gosanke water does affect them ) it tends to lighten in the heat and darken in the cooling temps of winter

Haijiro ( translated Bird-wing) is a black koi that has white on it's dorsal. pecs and tail. it's color is pretty static.

I love the black and white koi as being dramatic in their contrast

did you see in Ryan's post of the Charlotte post about doing away with a GC
in non gosanke this year. I think the idea is pure gold and koi like shiro's could be a GC winner ( or hairjiro) etc in a non gosanke category. Hope they'll bring back the concept, it's a good one!

Thanks much Dick. The name seems to be so romantic.... Any one want to translate to English. It must be something interesting.....

Yes, and I for one, completely supporting the idea for Non Gosanke GC.
If koi is an art, then we should not descriminate any masterpiece of art.

Dick, your thought and comments are always great and greatly appreciated.

I have been in the hobby for over 40 years and have yet to meet anyone who could predict that a fish such as a matsukawabake could go from beautiful to terrible so easily as yourself. I have personally seen this fish(in fact I helped select it) and have yet to see a better example at 2 yrs old than this one. I agree that this variety changes as do Kumonryu. But they don't always change in a negative fashion. In fact I own a kumonryu that has hardly changed it's pattern at all and I've had this fish for over 3 yrs. Maybe this fish can hold most of it's pattern as well and still maintain it's beauty.

Koi begin and end with kohaku - that's the truest statement I've ever heard about koi! However, there are a hell of lot of varieties you come across in your journey from beginning to end that make the trip totally worthwhile. Being "koi kichi" doesn't mean your a "purest" and only like gosanke. If you are really a "koi kichi" then you'll understand what I just said

Thumbs up Outstanding

That is an outstanding koi. Proof positive that some of the finest art is done in black and white.

I had the same question about Harjiro vs Matsukawabake when I saw Kevin Pham. He pointed out that they have different genealogy. Harjiro are derived from Karasugoi, while Matsukawabake are derived from Kumonryu. Here's a picture of the Harjiro that Kevin got in his recent trip.
