OK, Antonio asked me to stick with Kohakus and forget about the other wonderpiece of non-Gosanke.... So, here is the new Kohaku Ranking game
for the following kohaks. Ranking from 1 to 4 plus The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly comments please.

Thanks,

Number #1 is Kohak 2...Reason, the balance of pattern an and conformation is very good. Beni is consistant and thick.

Number #2 is Kohak 4...Kohak 2 and 4 are equal in quality, it could be a toss up between Kohak 2 and Kohak 4.

Number #3 is Kohak 1...The small window on the second step bothers me, but other than that it is equal to the quality as the other 2 mention.

Number #4 is Kohak 3...Very light pattern, has the best skin out of all of them, but the fact that on the face pattern the edging isn't sharp tells me that it will fade.

Also, they are in the range of 17-18" and came from the same breeder.

1st place - fish number 2

2nd place- fish number 4

3rd place- fish number 3

4th place - fish number 1

( over time, fish number 3 will lose to fish number 1 as one gains body and the window resolves itself. Meanwhile the pattern on fish number 3 will become disappointing as the fish grows)

#3 is the best IMO. sharp kiwa, bright white, balanced pattern and excellent body conformation.

Cool I am spilling the beans!

This breaders number one Kohaku is #1. We pulled his number one pond with him and pulled fish out before they got on the truck. Of the fish we pulled, nine were removed from our picks so that they could be kept as his Tategoi. We convinced him to let us have this Kohaku. The problem with the way we look at fish here in the U.S. , is that we are taught that a window in the Hi is a bad thing. Well, that rule is not something the Japanese follow to the same degree. With them it is always conformation and quality above anything else. This fish needs to be seen in person to truley judge its potential. It is an amazing Kohaku with a truley interesting pattern, window included.

I think number one kohaku jumped into number one pond from the number two pond where originaly the number two kohaku was the number one kohaku in the number one pond.

As a new member here and to the hobby I need help in understanding the "window" in a kohaku's pattern. Aesthetically the "window" looks fine to me. There must be some other reason?

This is a tough assignment. It's not all that clear (or red and white). In person, #1 has the best skin and color depth and balance. #2 is a "big fish" pattern that will continue to look good as the fish grows and expands. The beni is very elastic and thick and should continue to increase as it matures. #4 is very equal to #2. Skin quality and pattern speak volumes for growing both to their maximum size and become even more beautiful. Fish #3 has excellent skin. The leading edge of the face pattern is of no real concern when you see this fish in person. It came out of the mud on 10/18, arrived here on 10/31. I think with a little rest and good conditions, the head will clean up very nicely. Having spent the whole day with these fish yesterday, I can attest to the quality of all four. In fact, 3 of the four sold immediately. Although Dinh didn't take pictures of all the kohakus from this breeder, there are still several more which we selected from the breeder's #1 nisai gosanke mud pond.

Note: The breeder wanted to take two of these kohaku to the Nogyosai show, and #1 was a tategoi that the breeder wanted to keep but was persuaded into letting us have. No, this is not a sales pitch!! It's actually the FIRST TIME I have factual knowledge that this was in fact one of the breeder's true tategoi.

Not many people in this forum have seem these kohaku in person. And for sure, many people will not have any chance to see them in person since we all live around the world. So, if you have not seen them in person, please just comments and ranking them base on these pictures. I know it is very difficult to rank from picture. But they are very close to what I see. And it is a fun game for high quality koi...

I will post my pick and comments later......
