do wild Carp school?

do wild Carp school like our koi or are they more solitary? or do Koi in the mudponds stay in a school when they have such a vast space to swim in compared to our ponds?

hello all my old friends from boards far away, in time and space.

Carl

Common carps are active swimmers that can leap obstacles up to 1 meter high and negotiate torrential flows (Ref. 2906, in FishBase, 2003). Carp can typically be found in small schools, although larger carp often lead a solitary existence (Smith, 1991. In Chumchal, 2002).

I like to fly fish for the little buggers. In the spring during spawning season you can catch them schooling in great numbers. After spring they run in smaller groups and can be found on feeding grounds. The especially big ones are often loaners. And are like stalking bonefish for their wariness.... They seem to like
crayfish imitations best

Colorado River

I have seen lots of carp in the Colorado river over the last 20 years, but they are never in schools. I haven't researched this, but it seems like the current must have a lot to do with that.

When it suits them.
I used to see em stacked 40 across and 300 long below the dam WHEN THE TURBINES WERE TURNED OFF. just a couple of feet under the water . fairly still. not trying to go anywhere....like people laying on the beach soaking up the sun.
I've also seent ehm run in schools of 3-15 in small creeks, working the bottom for insects and crayfish.
of course these were all medium sized carp, in the 5-20lb range

Yes the wild carp do school and when the get very large they still school just not as close together. If you see one carp the others are close behind

When the water temps drop in the fall wild carp tend to school up, lakes in our area that are to be harvested are done in late fall & through out the winter.

Like Dick, I have fly fished for them on the East Walker River.. I have seen them school and hold in the river... But most of them were small not lunker type.. Gotta say they have great action on a fly rod..
