Question Treating spawning injuries

It had been raining the last two days and wouldn't you know it, it was enough to put my koi in the mood. I visited my pond this morning and found my 3 yr old momotaro kohaku (my current avatar) with two broken rays partially sticking out of her dorsal fin. It occurred in the middle of the fin.
I sedated her, applied betadine, and gave her a shot of baytril. The area around where the two rays were partially sticking out was pink/red and the fin looked bruised so I do not want infection to set in.
The water temp is 66 deg. Will 5 shots of baytril do the trick (once a day for three days, and once every other day for two days)? Is healing possible at this water temp? She is one of the bigger females I have at around 24+ inches.

Is this the right treatment regimen to get her on the right track again?

I always feel bad when someone posts here with some urgent concerns and does not get an answer in a timely manner. Among my many interests ( and abilities) medication is not my best gift. I have spent much more effort in emphasis on prevention than cure....

that said here are some thoughts

congrats on being proactive and doing what you've accomplished so far.

A QT tank here would be big, so that you could begin raising the temp and allowing the koi to raise it's metabolism to meet the challenge of repair. your present temp is marginal for healing. QT tanks make the koi more available and there is less stress episodes in handling

I am not a big Baytril fan. Lots of handling and lots of injections leads itself to a bigger % of something going wrong. Nuflor while more difficult to inject is longer lasting which means less handling.

As Dick mentioned, you need to raise the temperature of the water. I am not in favor of using medicines, and will only do so as a last resort. IMHO, if given good water, an environment free of stress and a higher temperatures, koi can manage very well on their own. You will be amazed how well their own system will be able to heal themselves.

Blue, I have a koi that had his gill cover ripped up by a heron, I did not do anything except make sure the water was good and he got well on his own. And I do mean a very bad injury. Put him in QT and he should be ok.

Thanks everyone who replied. I will monitor the koi and use antibiotics as a last resort.

Do you have a pic of the injury so we can best give you more advice?

Aw shucks, Blue, what a shame. Go with the clean (warm if you can) water and hold the antibiotcis in reserve.

Read a thread (not too long ago -- on Koiphen, I believe) that involved splinting the ray with a toothpick and some superglue, but that's way over my head.

Good luck and keep us posted, OK? Don

I will keep an eye on the injury and if it worsens, I will net her and take pics. Don't want to stress her out more than she already is.

update on koi after a week

Hi Guys,
good news. Dorsal fin is no longer pink or red. Bruising is gone as well. Area repaired itself and is white. Left it alone, I admit it is hard more me to sit back and do nothing. But I am very happy her immunity took care of the injury without my further intervention.
Hope they don't spawn anytime soon again

Blue, Im glad to hear that the koi is better, now I am waiting on mine to heal. All I done was netted them and split the fins of one koi in two different places. It is hard to sit back but if you think about it when you scratch yourself all you have to do it keep it clean and it will heal, well anything else is the same way. Post a pic of the koi blue, we would love to see it.
