Potentially, yes. But also, there will likely be some good ones to grow on becuase of the bloodline, IMHO. The best looking koi do not always throw off the best babies, but the apple does not fall far from the tree Sounds like a paradox, I know.

Ok. I realize I am not good at taking pictures of koi. I will get me a blue bowl to take pic when I get ready to take more.

Will I be able to raise the fry from this set to a good size next year? I realize the koi are not very large and need to know if the eggs will be large enough to get the fry up to at least 6 to 8 inches in one summer. If this is going to be a problem then maybe I need to wait another year before I spawn the pair.

Hi Judy

I think you have at leaast 1 to 2 more years before these fish are truly ready to spawn. The first spawn of a new set usually end up producing fewer eggs and less fry. Especially if you use only one male. Using 2 males is strongly recommended as they can jointly provide more milt to make sure all eggs are fertilized. Also, what happens if you use only one male and he is infertile or too young to produce enough milt for good fertilization?

Good Luck with whatever you decide. Breeding is the easier part of producing good to high quality fish. It's mostly in the selection process where people excel. Find out as much as you can from Brady and Matt and anyone else who has been breeding for at least 3 years about culling. It takes the breeders in Japan 2 to 4 years before they know what they're going to end up with from a new set of parents. Soooo, BE PATIENT!!

Regards,

Mike

I think what you are see is the sun coming through the shade tree on the second pic making it look like the hi is fading. I am going to take another look at the koi as I did not notice them when I bowled the koi. If that is what it is then wont it throw back to the siblings?

Judy

KFG: I have a somewhat different but serious comment. I took my whole family to visit Quality Koi Farm last Saturday in NJ about 30 miles south of where I live. They have an indoor tank for their females. Its about 50 ft X 100 ft X5 ft [ i am not that good with measurements] with about 50 large females 10-30 lbs. They are fed every hour and they installed an incredible bio system for waste processing. They really treat these females well. The largest is an Ochiba at least 30 lbs.

If you get time, my suggestion is taht before you start breeding, visit this farm. Quality Koi people (Matt, Ross etc.) are very nice and they take their time to show you around. I think you will get a first hand look of an excellent breeding program. It might help you to breed your brood well.

They both look like males to me, but if they are opposite sex they could likely spawn this spring - whether you want them to or not. Small broodstock produce small eggs, small eggs produce weaker fry, yada, yada. Don't worry about it and do your thing.

I'm with you. While these koi aren't giants, they are far from babies and come from a proven gene-pool. My females were 9"&10" long when they spawned this past spring and the average size of the offspring is 4"+ from a pond mutt gene pool. Several are in the 6"-7" range. With the size and genetics of KFG's momo's I would think 6"+ fry in a single growing season would be a reasonable expectation and an even better future as they continue to mature. Besides, as someone mentioned in a previous post the practice in culling now will benefit her in the future.

They do it to me every year I cant say they are unwanted though as I enjoy them to much. Its alway fun to watch them grow and see what they will look like latter on.

I am going to try and spawn them next spring and they may not produce many eggs but I hope at least enough to learn to cull and grow them. I was told that one was a female and one a male, milt was extracted from the male and both koi are the same age and no milt on the other koi. You would think if both were male and the same age you would get milt from both right?
