momo

These are the two koi I will be spawning this spring. The biggest koi is the male I was told but it looks female and is starting to bellie up.

I wanted to show these koi this year and did not can someone tell me if they have a chance. I might show them next year if you think they are worth taking.

Judy, they look a little young and lean to be thinking of breeding from them next year. Are you sure one of them is female?

This is one of my own bred 2 year olds from Momotaro 'Eagle' line just after harvest. Although perhaps a little body heavy, this is more the build you should be looking at in a 2 year old.

But you should really be thinking of 3 or 4 years olds for breeding.

Maurice.

On the information that we have, let's consider our options.

It is recommended that you hold off breeding and allow them to get another year or two older. So That means you can plan on showing them next year.

It was suggested that your koi are a little thin. So it wouldn't hurt if you had the facilities this year to keep feeding them and attempting to bulk them up. If you don't, maybe a friend you have ,might consider boarding. If it turns out they will only take one I'd suggest you go with the bulkier bodied one (without the kuchibeni) good luck!

Maurice: it wouldn't be right not to acknowledge the beautiful koi you produced.
Keep up the good work....

i agree with Maurice regarding breeding those kohaku, but still you could try for the fun of it

Hi Judy,

I was unsure of the sex, but they each have their strong and weak points. The two step is more of a show pattern, and has the better body, though that is hard to say for sure from the photo angle. They both have pretty good white, but I worry a bit about the possible pattern weakness', but again that could just be the photo. Also not sure if the bottom one has shimi's, or tobi hi.

Worth showing, where the success will depend on the competition. Bring 'em

Both koi are 22 inches, the long and slender koi is the female I was told. I dont really like the body on that koi. But the other koi if you turn the koi straight and take a pic the body looks close to Maurice koi. Fat and thick koi. I tried to take a shot of the koi and could not keep them straight, every time I turned the container they turned. I really needed some help and did not have it.

Ok so what would be the problems with breeding these two koi next spring? Would it hender the size of the fry or would I just get a smaller spawn? Would the fry grow well? Or will it stunt the growth of the parent koi?

Hi Judy

Why do you have to move the container? Why don't you move around the container when you take a pic?

I used a square container to take the pics and that does not work as good as a round and to these koi are so skidish its hard to keep them still. I had to wipe my camra lends of many times just to take pics. Plus like I said i am not good at this and needed some help

Also I want the good and the bad on these koi and I dont want anyone to beat around the bush I want it straight so I can learn. Its not a matter of if I like what is said, its a matter of me being able to raise strong koi from the pair.

Maurice I like the koi that you posted and my koi is a little older than the one that you have posted. I am not sure if I will get much better growth from them or not. The two koi will be three year old koi this spring. I need to talk to Brady and see if I can get some large koi from him to spawn later. I am just going to spawn one pair this spring to start out because I still have so much to learn. I dont want to spawn many pair yet as I am not sure if I will have the space to raise the koi to the size that I want and I still have to get some buyers. If I can raise this one spawn and sell off all of them and be able to get good growth, then I will try another pair later.

HI Judy,

A trick I learned from Chuck and Kimberli Downs for pictures was to put a little oil of cloves in the water to "calm" the fish. When I am having trouble getting a good picture, I pull that out. Not enough to knock them out, but it does work quite well. For me, a rectangular tub works better than other shapes, ideally much bigger than the koi and blue. I bought a 5 foot long one at Walmart ( I think) years ago. It seems to work better because the koi can swim straight down the middle. (Though they do not always do that without "encouragement" )

These are decent koi with a good bloodline. Looking at the pix again, the weakness in the hi is evident, especially in the second picture. 3 years old is early to have that weakness. I have seen many parent koi in Japan that are not the greatest looking, but throw off good babies. But they are much older. If you want to breed them, you should go ahead. At the very least, it will help learning..

Hope that helps.

If I breed them will it stunt their growth?

I think what you are see is the sun coming through the shade tree on the second pic making it look like the hi is fading. I am going to take another look at the koi as I did not notice them when I bowled the koi. If that is what it is then wont it throw back to the siblings?
