Good points. Hi color is very good and so is the shiro. Decent looking body conformation too.
Bad points. The Zipper is a bit ragged and the Hi is unbalanced from left to right above the pecs.
I don't have any Shusui (yet), but everything I see seems to indicate they are tough to finish and maintain.

Shusui don't have 'shiro' . I think you mean to say 'skin'. But then again you'd be wrong again! Doitsu fish of course have skin ( lots of it!) but not as we use the term when we are talking about skin on a wagoi.
Try this--- The fish is very clean.

Nice strong hi with pretty face markings. Does a shusui "Doitsugoi" have kiwa?

Hey King, good question?! They have a training edge to their pattern and that IS the definition of Kiwa. But they do not have the dimension to their 'kiwa' that a wagoi would have. Instead, the pattern is one thick or thin coat of color that is comprised of a series of islands of color joined into a plate. You can very often see these overlapping clusters breaking up in mature fish. You also can notice that the powdery nature of the color composition is similar to the color on the heads of wagoi. So let's say that doitsu have kiwa in the broadest definition of the word but hardly have the kind of kiwa we can have an indepth discussion about- IE Maruzome or kamisori type kiwa as there are no scales to support it or the appraisal of it. I'm sure the Japanese must have another word to describe? I'll see what I can find out- Brian, can you help? JR

my wife really likes shusui. alot more than other koi types. She got a 13" with nice blue and red on both sides with clear head and nice zipper. Red patterns on sides are not evenly but the fish looks nice. I plan to pick up another 4" shusui today for her but reading on another thread gave me some reservations on adding more shusui to the pond. unless water condition is correctly maintain, else tarnish head and lost of luster can occur. I hope some more KB gurus can offer more in-depth look on how to raise shusui properly. I'd love to add more shusui to my pond but I am reluctant if the efford ends up a wast of time.

Steve,

I think the water conditions that help to maintain good coloration in shusui/asagi/hariwake/kikusui/midori etc make it tough on developing gosanke.

you almost have to choose which you want to benefit. Shusui don't respond well to hardness, the measure of which most sanke/showa favor.

a few years back when I ofted my prize gosanke in favor of asagi/shusui, I had kept them in water for "blues"...well the new owners were delighted in what happened with their black once in their ponds.

in reading old nichirin's you'll find comments from japanese breeders about why they went for a specific color variety of koi to breed because their water benefited that color variety.

I am delighted to have JR commenting here more and more as he is a great sourse of knowledge and especially on these koi.

my concern on shusui selection has always been the tough job of finding a good "zipper". Next priority is finding the deepest best blue as it's vulnerable
and fades with age...unlike asagi who's red oft times increase with age, the opposite is often the case with hannah shusui....

tell your wife I think she has excellent taste in koi color varieties!
