Jim...I don't really get where your going with this but spit it out. If not a beni kumonryu then what...doitsu showa? It doesn't have blue...could be a reflection from the bowl.
Jim...if by a new kitten, you mean just getting new koi...don't worry. I actually sell koi on my website as well (I wont mention it because I don't advertise here yet.) If I like a new fish better than my old fish, I sell the one I don't wish to keep. That way my pond is never overstocked. I sold 8 fish last week...so plenty of room!!!

Its not a Beni Kumonryu. Not sure what it would be called, you could call it something but its not a good example of any set variety. A lot of people like colorfull interesting fish so depending on your goals that is not always a bad thing. Maybe what JR is getting at is the fish you usually post are small colorfull, finished looking fish. Usually not the best fish to grow for the future. My best guess is a Kin Kikokuryu but its a little busy.

Most of my current fish are small (under 12")..I have excellent access to dealers near me with koi in that size range. I have some good future prospects.....don't show them all here. I have competed koi in the past and done well. I am hoping to do at least one show next season. Gotta see which members of the "team" are looking good. This koi is not metallic...so I don't think it is a kin kikokuryu. The dealer and I both thought beni kumonryu...what else could it be? It is not metallic and has no blue(my lousy photography)

Question Zipper back - Must be a?

I think it is a Shusui. A messy Shusui. I have not seen a Beni Kumonryu with scales on its back like that.

The one that marco just posted has scales. Definitely not a shusui.

Hi Guys, no I’m not quibbling about the variety. It is of the beni kumonryu type. A kin ki kokuryu would have by definition, a metallic platinum type white and the classic ‘five points’ of all hakari type fish. The shine on the shoulder is likely flash or skin luster at the water’s surface.

What I was referring to is the idea that a ‘kitten’ will always be a kitten. This is a baby fish and of a variety that is a rapidly passing ‘cut flower.’ So very soon it will be an adult and likely well past its sell date.

To praise this fish for what it is - is fine! But to speculate about it’s future as a developing fish is unenlightened. This complex of karasu goi crossed with shusui, showa or kohaku produce a nice cross male fish but none of the ‘future’ typical of a gosanke. Typically these fish look great until the decline of either luster or color. A really good beni kumonryu is a beautiful animal but very rare. Perhaps 99% are eye candy for the moment.
