Hi Luke...that is the plan...got something to prove!!!

Jim...I would never compare something like this to a gosanke...it's apples and oranges. Maybe next year I will throw it up against other kawarimono and see what happens in its size class. I would like to show everyone a beautiful adult beni kumonryu in a few years. Hopefully it won't go sumi crazy..and become a black fish. I can tell you that right now it is an eye catcher. I am unsure of its age..and I didn't measure it...I am estimating 12", but may be a little larger. It is rare that I see this variety at dealers near me...so when I did, I grabbed it. When I do see one for sale on the internet, the prices are usually a lot higher than this. For now...I will enjoy it for what it is....If it becomes a stinker..You will all see it on ebay..lol!

Regarding JR's cut flower analogy... I can't recall when I saw a Beni Kumonryu over 24" that looked like much of anything. I am sure there must be some, but it seems to me that somewhere around 22" they begin disappearing from public view.

This is not related to Beni Kumonryu.....

But how about this instead of that ;-))

With this, does it make you feel like the lovely kois are swimming instead of hanging ;-)

All hakari fish have good luster ( teri) as one and two year olds. This metallic luster/teri fades in 90% of all specimens with the true hakari and hakari hariwaki types retaining better luster into full adulthood ( yamabuki and platinum).

The hikari crosses of hikari mono and any other variety tend to fade out quickest. Therefore in the both the ‘contest’ and at the breeder facility, hikari with weak or missing teri are eliminated so that the wrong lesson and weaker genetic traits do not permeate into future generations.

Very often these traits of hikari and ginrin are not complete and do not show over the entire body. Because metallic sheen requires good light for the human eye to appreciate it, judges look to certain sights or points on the fish to assess metallic coverage. The points for assessing metallic crosses would be:

Head

Pec fins

area in front of dorsal ( shoulder

peduncle

dorsal to tail fin coverage

All young metallic fish ( tosai) will attract the untrained eye to the pec fins and head. But if metallic is already faded or never existed on the five points, the fish is already in the process of failing.

Nishikigoi are cut flowers.
