A year gone past since Niigata Earthquake....

A year has gone by actually a year and some change. I meant to start this thread while in Japan but the internet connection in the room was (fubar) I took some pics while Driving through Mushigame on our way to Maruju Tanaka's place. What I saw on our way saddened me a lot. I waited a whole year top see the changes in landscape.

The landslides were one thing.. Seeing this 2 car pile up pretty much hit home that this was much worse than thought to the rest of the world let alone the koi world.. The roads were nothing more than dirt but much improvement was made as you can see by many cobble retaining walls..

The roads were one lane and very tight as you can see. The entrance to much of the devastation was to come. A guard was at a check point. You needed a pass to get through.. We had a pass reserved in advance..

Well, our van got through the check point but our Sedan the guard would not let though. Usually we could pass but day before some outlaw said he was with another car. Well when they figured him out they chased him though Mushigame. Well to make a long stopry short we packed in the van and I and Larry road with Maruju or was it Kevs sexy pose that got the guard..

Joe, thanks for the pics...A year later and the major task of them getting things back in order...They all have to be given a pat on the back for keeping their heads up...

Thanks for pics Joe. It must be hard on those people, the devestation and clean-up efforts and to think it could happen again. Wind damage is one thing but having your home slide down a hill would be fubar for sure.

The bnext few pics is of Maruju's house. It was 2 story house on hillside. In the backround you can see Iwashita's house on that cliff side. His Greenhouse not effected. Maruju's house was being out into the back of a dump truck while we were there. I snapped a few pics of this and the old green house we were all familiar with. But also took a shot of the new greenhouse down the hill.

Joe: What are your impressions of how the breeders are conducting their operations compared to pre-earthquake?

Business as usual Mike.... What I did notice though is more precautions to make people sterilize shoes and some places want you wash hands. This makes sense to me as we visit many greenhouses and handle fish and or stop around wet floors.

But certainly the Breeders were all very happy as usual to see foreigners come to see their works of art..
