Hi Handy
just call me Joy.
yes yellowish shiroji could be because of spirulina of course, but there are a few other factors too as mentioned (water temp, genetics, food, etc). individual fish may react differently to these factors too imho, hence you might find a certain koi showing yellowish tinge while others seem to do better.
Manda is a very good food, i used to feed that too. but now that my koi have grown and consuming more food, it's becoming too expensive for me. i feed saki hikari (Basic diet) these days.

my soragoi now looks like a chagoi. she's 92 cm, not yet a meter. developing a bent back i suspect because my pond's too small (only around 17T).

cheers.

Hi Aqui,

It's quit hard to find sophisticated yet secured pond over here though we have some breeders that have a lot of mud ponds but they usually refuse to accept outsiders koi. Btw, what the refresh benefits really are? I'm not really sure of its effect to our kois.

Cheers,

Hi Roger,

How are you? We met at last Singapore Open 2005. GCSpyder was represent me to you and it was really nice to meet you. So now I would do understand that male koi will tend to have yellowish skin as GCSpyder explain to me like this (hope you not charge me of copyright matter, GC ) :

"Male koi does show yellowish skin, which is one of the reasons why female koi are prized for retaining their white shiroji. One of the reasons why male skin turns yellow easily is because the colour pigmentation gets collected in the fat cell, which appears yellow. With female, the pigmentation is absorbed by the eggs when it reaches sexual maturity. "

Well, it makes sense to me and I no more confuse what was really happend to Koi A. Thank-you very much for all of you who help me find out the clue.

Cheers,

Hi Joy,

How was your driving lesson yesterday with Rendy? We should hang drive together next, ok? Indeed I guess we all hope to have good shiroji of our lovely kois and to maintain the balance and quality of the colour are just one matter of kois world. Like Roger said it was a sad story to have a sanke with good hi and sumi quality but yellow shiroji . IMHO, it's harder to keep the shiroji than the other colour.

Wow, amazing size... Soragoi of 92cm, hmm just if I have that one on my pond . Well, you might want to find a backbone surgery doctor to fix the bent .

Btw, I have a plan to visit Kiki (Samurai Koi) next week as he would have another last auction sakai kois per 20 Nov. If you have time, we could go together wit Rendy and the others. I feel sorry for him as he should 'eliminate' about 1,300 kois which suspect infected by KHV from Momo.

Cheers,

Handy,
keeping good skin (including shiroji) is a big issue, yes, but for me my main concern is keeping a good body shape on the koi. i don't keep koi so seriously to the extent of demanding perfect skin, but bad body shape really irks me. on one hand a skinny koi is unappealing and lacks presence but a droopy tummied koi with small tail joint is just as much an eye-sore. to be honest this recurring problem has kind of put me off koi a bit, i'm much less enthusiastic these days, and i've decided that i won't really bother with nice tosais anymore cause i'll just end up wiping out their potential by putting them into my small pond. on the other hand, to buy a nice nissai or two, costs aside, i'd have to seriously reduce the population of my pond first and that is also another issue cause i quite like the bigger fishes i've been keeping. hence no koi buying for me for at least a while, sorry, and i'd have to pass on the trip to Samurai.

i'd be very welcome to have a new driving partner. you can get my number off rendy if you like, then we can meet up (you can come over and see my modest pond too) and go strike a few balls.

cheers

I do agree with you about body conformation. It just like a beatiful women with not sexy body (I'm sorry, no offense). But if a women has a sexy body, though the face and the skin just at average, she would catch our eyes when she walks .

I would like to see what kind of things that turn you down a bit of koi world, if you don't mind ofcourse, whenever I have time to visit your pond.

Cheers,

hahaha. not exactly being very PC here, but yes i feel very much the same way as you. nice pretty face but bad figure what's the point right? i guess the analogy for a guy would be someone smart but with no sense of humor?

it's not that i don't like kois anymore, i still very much do. but until the day i have a good enough pond to give a potential koi a fighting chance to blossom (in other words, a 100T pond at least), i'll focus on enjoying the more general aspects of koi appreciation and not be as demanding on their skin quality, parentage, whether they came from auctions, etc. when i started out in this hobby (or re-started, to be exact, cause i've kept koi since i was a boy of 13) i was very keen to learn about the finer points of koi appreciation. but now when i see a nice koi i no longer feel the desire to own it knowing i'd just ruin it, instead i've learned to be happy with the more mundane specimen. boy i sure hope my koi don't have telepathic ability, otherwise i'll have a bunch of sulking fishes tomorrow morning when i go greet them!

your concern abou the color enhancers is easy to overcome. Spirulina and many other color enhancing food has large amounts of yellow pigment in it. Not good for the rest of hte koi of the beni imho. Dick's advice about shrimp meal or just shrimp is good. It has red pigment vs yellow, and wont taint the white. You can also try more oxygen and a shower or tower, and the chiller will just cause the pigment cells to contract making it appear more white, but does not fix the underlying problem of leftover enhancers in the white area.

The other thing coul dbe iron or other metals or things in the water. Do you use a prefilter?

First off ..The size of the tank has NOTHING to do with a bent back.
The shiroji is NOT regualated by temperature.. at all.
Color food is unnecessary.. except in inferior koi ( poor genetics)
Males will have a bit of " tinge" in season. Not too much ( if the genetics are good)

I'll disappear again for a few months..again.

Maybe you could try some far out infra red rays to improve your koi ?
It wont cost much more than the miracle food.
Go for it !

Here's a nasty little yellow male that's been fed Mazuri for over a year.. in a mixed tank ! ( GAAASP !)
ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz
