Dinh: No time to pull out my books to try to find you a date for your second question. As to the first, "koi" is anglicized and likely would not have been used until nishikigoi were in the West. I doubt any one can give you a date on that. On the other hand, the phonetic twin "goi" is the romanized version of the Japanese term for carp ... so there have been "goi" for many centuries. "Ma" goi, "Iro" goi, "Cha" goi, "Sora" goi .... all simply color/trait descriptions of goi. I think "Nishiki" goi would be late 19th century, but would have to check my books.

Nishikigoi is a modern term developed in the 1960's to better describe/market the improvements in colored carp (Irogoi) made in the Niigata area of Japan.

Koi is the westernized shortcut version of Nishiki-goi which started to be used in early seventies. Travel in Japan outside of koi producing areas and ask about koi and no body knows what you ate talking about. Say Nishikigoi and most people know.

Decendants of the black fish known as Mogoi also called koi or common carp. Colour mutations first appeared two hundred years ago. They originate from eastern Aisa . At his birth Chinese phiosopher Confuscius (551-479 BC )was presented with a koi by King Shoko of Ro. In 533 BC a Chinese book entitled Yogyokyo set out methods of breeding koi. At this time color variations were limitided to red and grey.

The first account of them being kept in Japan, apparently by an Emperor, dates back to AD 200.

They were called Nishikigoi from the start, koi or common carp.

Year of Asagi first produced in 1875 Doitsu Asagi and Shusui were produced in 1910.

1830 to 1850 produced the first Kohaku

Dick your keep the right type koi because as far back as the book say's, these koi exchanged hand for very large sums of money. Makes me wonder in 1875 how much it cost for a good Asagi. It does not tell me that in my book. Its funny as the Asagie led to a temperary ban on the industery. They were eating these koi like we do catfish now,, back then the no scale type did not have a chance Of course these were from the Germanic/Austrian origins.

Judy
ps. love this book

It was only several years ago (1999 or 2000 - I'm not good at dates) that a California husband-wife team of judges named an asagi as GC of the North Florida show. I was too new at the hobby to know if a wave of protest resulted, since the show really was not a major one, at the time.
