Koi Physiology

A dealer told me that the body grows faster than the head as they are fresh from mud ponds. So sometimes the head looks small, but will catch up later.

Is this real koi physiology or salemanship? MA Le

Ogata Kois tend to have this body(small head, big body), but the one with very good confromation fetch a higher price...we are taught to buy koi of portion and those fish with great portion or confromation are very expensive...

I sense some well deserved frustration Aquitori. All the promises, wishful thinking, predictions of fantastic results are swimming around in our ponds fissing out in one way or another weather it's color, body, size you name it. There is only one way we are going to get the perfect koi. Save our money for 4+ years, no more small or medium heart breakers, and get a perfect 28" Kohaku or what ever and get rid of all these non-achievers and be done with it.

Kingkong, your sure way of selecting koi is quite expensive. He he! I am looking for a trade-off by buying a nisai carefully ... the cone with excellent body and skin quality. May be a hobbyist should buy at least one "anchor" fish?

Aquitory, thank you for your advise/observation. There are plenty of Ogata fish around to check and confirm your finding. MA Le

The think with growing fish is to maintain the quality. Anyone can grow a fish, me I can grow fish in a 1500gal pond, but to maintain a fish is another beast in itself.
