Thanksgiving Day massacre...almost

Just came in from the pond. It seems while I was eating turkey a piece of pvc with a ball valve snapped off on one of my filters causing the pond to drain. Fortunately I have an emergancy shutoff switch that works and after it drained about a foot of water it shut everything off but the air pump. Wow that was scary to find that. Cause of pvc breaking is unknown but my in-laws were checking out the pond when I wasn't there. I'd never blame them but man am I glad I have that cutoff switch. Moral of the story is if you don't have a cutoff switch then get one!

Notice how valves are so often involved in a problem?

PVC gate valves are not reliable as they tend to break easily due to their plastic shafts. Plastic ball valves are hard to turn esp. 2" and larger. Most lubricants will not harm the ball or plastic turn easier. Silicones can damage plastics. PVC also expands and contracts dramatically with temperature changes.

Glad you had a safety switch on there. Imagine if you had been out of town. Wouldn't it have been nice to get a few cell calls and emails telling you your babies were in trouble and needed rescuing?

Did you ever get that ph meter?

No I've been out of town pretty much since we discussed that. It's on my never ending list of things to do though....sigh.
